Prosecutors dropped charges against a Missouri high school teacher after she married the student she was accused of having s*x with.
In February 2019, former Sarcoxie High School teacher Baylee A. Turner, 26, was accused of having s*xual contact with one of her male students following an investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, reported the Joplin Globe.

Turner, then 23, was a first-year high school English teacher when she was accused of having s*x with a student in January 2019, prompting her to resign.
According to court documents, both Turner and the student admitted they had s*x at Turner’s home in Sarcoxie, about 260 miles southwest of St. Louis.
Turner taught English at Sarcoxie High School for two years before being assigned to teach high school sophomores and seniors in 2019.
Assistant District Attorney Nate Dally told the Globe the charge against her was dropped after she married the student, whose identity has not been released.
Dally said that because the former student now has marital or spousal privilege, he can no longer be compelled to testify against his wife, weakening the state’s case in court.
It is unclear when the two were married, a search of court documents did not provide the student’s name or age.
Turner faced up to four years in prison.

Letourneau pleaded guilty to raping Vili when she was 12 years old
Dally added that Turner turned over her state teaching license, which was one of the main targets of prosecutors.
Missouri state law prohibits s*xual contact between teachers and students, regardless of age.
The Globe reported that Turner was one of six young educators in the state who have been accused of having s*x with students in recent years.
The case echoes the infamous relationship between Washington state teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and sixth grader Vili Fualaau.
In 1997, Letourneau pleaded guilty to raping Vili when she was 12 years old and served seven years behind bars.
The couple ended up marrying in 2005 and had two children before Fualaau filed for separation in 2017.
Letourneau died of colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 58.
