Who is Nicholas Hutchins?

Nicholas Hutchins, 55, waited for his former partner to head to work before jumping out of an alleyway in Sutton, south London, on July 31, 2020.

The victim thought Hutchins was going to hit her and raised her left arm to defend against her.

A few seconds later, she realized Hutchins was armed and yelled, “You never should have left me.”

The victim’s screams alerted members of the public and soon residents who heard the screams ran out and tackled Hutchins to the ground.

Brave members of the public kept Hutchins pinned to the ground until police arrived, six minutes after receiving the initial call, Croydon Crown Court heard.

Hutchins told officers he just wanted to talk to her wife and insisted he didn’t stab her.

Attack

Jealous ex-husband Nicholas Hutchins has been jailed for 19 years after admitting he tried to kill his estranged wife by stabbing her with a knife in the street during a daylight attack.

He was told in court that he had a history of violence towards her wife and at the time of the attack he was on police bail for harassing her.

Police searched the nearby area and found the weapon used to stab the victim, as well as a separate bag of knives that later turned out to also belong to Hutchins.

The 55-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment for a cut on his hand where he confessed to a doctor that he went to Village Row in Sutton with the intention of killing his estranged wife.

Hutchins said: ‘If I can’t live with her, no one else should live with her. I wanted to kill her and then kill myself.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he received treatment for multiple stab wounds to his arm and upper body.

Murder

Hutchins, of Carshalton, was due to stand trial but changed his plea on the day it was due to start.

He admitted to attempted murder and possession of a knife and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, with an extended license of three years.

The court heard that he had a history of abusive and controlling behavior towards his wife that had escalated before she left him in March 2020.

At the time of the attack, he was out on bail for stalking her after she chased the bus she was riding and showed up at her sister’s house begging to see her.

The court heard that the couple had been married for more than three decades and had two children together, but Ms Hutchins said he had been possessive throughout their relationship.

Victim Statement

Hutchins’ ex-wife described how she felt her family had lost a husband, father and grandfather as a result of her crimes.

In a victim impact statement read in court, Hutchins’ ex-partner said: “As a result of what Nicholas did to me, I feel like he has stolen my future because I have to think about going out or even vacations as I am worried about my safety.

‘I also feel that I have lost my husband.

“Even though he wasn’t the best, he was still my husband and we were married for a significant amount of time.

‘I also feel that my children and grandchildren have lost their father and grandfather.

“It’s fortunate that the grandchildren are young enough that this incident doesn’t have an impact on them.”

She continued: ‘I try not to think about what he did that day, but he has really affected me.

‘I always try to keep myself busy because if I’m busy I’m not thinking about it.’

Investigation

Detective Constable Chris Dimmer, the South Area Public Protection Unit’s investigating officer, said: “This was a malicious attack on an innocent woman, simply because she didn’t want to be with him anymore.”

‘Hutchins was determined to cause serious harm and it is fortunate that the victim was not left with life-threatening injuries.

“I commend the brave members of the public who stepped in and stopped Hutchins from causing further injury to his former partner or another member of the public.

“I hope that today’s sentence against Hutchins sends a clear message to those who intend to commit violent acts. We will pursue and bring to justice the perpetrators of any abuse, including domestic abuse.
