He was jailed overnight on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police in New Mexico’s largest city said Monday.

Police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said the knife attacks were random over the course of three hours, mostly along Central Avenue, one of the city’s main arteries.

“There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason” to the attacks, Gallegos said.

It was not immediately clear if Guterres had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

Guttierez has been charged with felony criminal mischief for driving under the influence of drugs, according to New Mexico court records.

In 2014, Guttierez failed to appear in court for driving with a revoked driver’s license, the data show. He responded to the court with a handwritten note stating that he was in federal custody in another county and was trying to recover while in custody.

He was convicted in a federal prison in a case in which he entered an online casino north of Albuquerque with a revolver and ammunition.

Authorities say Guttierez got into a fight with a casino security guard, dropped his revolver, got into a car, and drove the police on a suburban chase until he crashed and went into hiding.

Records show that he was released from federal custody in 2020.

The first report of a stabbing came at about 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Responding to a scene in the city center, officers found a man with his hand amputated. Other knife attacks took place outside a smoking area near the University of New Mexico, outside an apartment building and a grocery store, where officers found two people with neck injuries.

All witnesses identified a man on a bicycle who was armed with a large knife.

Police said the victims were taken to different hospitals and although two were seriously injured, the condition of all those admitted to the hospital was stable. Some were released after receiving treatment for their injuries.
