A federal government agency targeted couples whose love may have soured with a Valentine’s Day post asking them to turn in their exes if they owned an illegal weapon.

‘Valentine’s Day can still be fun even if you broke up,’ the tweet from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives began Monday.

‘Do you have information about a former (or current) partner involved in illegal gun activity? Let us know, and we will make sure it’s a Valentine’s Day to remember!’

The tweet included a graphic of a broken heart with phone and email tip lines and said, ‘We would love to meet them and offer them a Valentine’s Day surprise.’

It is not clear if the post, which was retweeted by the Department of Justice, received any takers.

The ATF did not return a call seeing comment from DailyMail.com.

But it was widely panned on social media.

‘Want revenge on this Valentine’s Day? Make any accusation and we’ll kick in your ex’s door. No proof needed, we just need you to make the call,’ one person tweeted.

Another person tweeted: ‘This is very slimy of you guys to try to twist this day for your own benefit by encouraging people to turn on one another.’

‘In a time when more Americans than ever are worried about authoritarian government action you thought this was a good idea to tweet,’ someone else tweeted.

The ATF was not alone in tempting lovers to get revenge on their former flames, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office shared a similar post on Monday asking people to turn in exes with outstanding warrants against them for the holiday.

On Facebook the North Carolina police department posted a graphic of roses next to handcuffs and posted about the ‘Valentine’s Day Weekend Special’

‘Do you have an ex-Valentine and know they have outstanding warrants? Give us a call with their location and we’ll take care of the rest,’ the post said including a phone number.

‘This Valentine’s Day Weekend Special starts off with a set of limited-edition platinum bracelets, free transportation with a chauffeur, a one-night minimum stay in our luxurious (five star) accommodations, and this special is capped off with a special Valentine’s dinner,’ the department joked.

‘We know this special is so incredible that you may be tempted to provide additional referrals. We don’t blame you, this special is too sweet to pass up. Operators are standing by,’ the post concluded.
