Vasu Vats Facts
- Although both his parents are teachers, Vasu was never interested in studies. In his childhood, he used to travel a substantial distance daily just so that he could practice his skills at a cricket academy.
- He first came into the spotlight in October 2021 in a Vinoo Mankad Trophy (the premier limited-overs domestic competition for men’s under-19 cricket in India) match against Nagaland where he was representing his home state of Uttar Pradesh. He had produced scarcely believable figures of 8 wickets for just 4 runs in 7 overs (3 of which were maidens). He had also picked up a hat-trick (the feat of claiming 3 wickets off 3 successive deliveries) in that match.
- This performance, just 2 months before the 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup meant that he was a certainty to be picked in India’s squad for the tournament. However, an injury just before the start of the tournament had meant that he was forced to withdraw his name.
- He was then selected in India’s squad for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup but was unable to break into the playing XI in India’s opening match against South Africa. Soon after that match, India’s captain Yash Dhull and 5 other members of the Indian squad had been tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that all of those players had to miss out on the next (and last) 2 matches of the group stage, against Ireland and Uganda.
- Vasu did not make the cut for the match against Ireland but was selected in the match against Uganda. This match was his Youth ODI debut and he had bowled a spell of 1/18 in 4 overs as Uganda was bundled out for just 79 runs. India’s victory margin of 326 runs in this match was the second-biggest victory margin in the history of Youth ODIs.
- All members of India’s squad who were affected by COVID-19 had recovered in time for the quarter-final match against Bangladesh, and the regular members of the team’s playing XI had regained their spots. Just before that match, it was reported that Vasu had suffered a hamstring injury and would miss the rest of the tournament. He had been replaced in the squad by wicketkeeper-batsman Aaradhya Yadav.
