I totally did not see this coming.

Russia accused the United States at the United Nations on Friday of supporting a biological weapons program in Ukraine, a fact Moscow said it uncovered as its forces pressed deeper into Ukraine. The claim was vehemently denied by the United States’ U.N. ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s U.N. representative, told the U.N. Security Council that Russia had discovered “truly shocking facts” related to what he said were at least 30 Ukrainian laboratories working on diseases including anthrax, cholera and “the plague,” with funding and oversight by the U.S. military.

He said the “reckless” activity included research related to diseases born by birds, lice and fleas. “We call on you to think about a very real biological danger to the people in European countries which can result from an uncontrolled spread of bio-agents from Ukraine,” he said.

Just kidding. A blind man could see this was going to happen.

All US Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield could do was impotently sputter:

“Russia is attempting to use the Security Council to legitimize disinformation and deceive people to justify President Putin’s war of choice against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” she said, adding that China has also been spreading disinformation supporting Russia’s claims.

“Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program, and there are no Ukrainian biological weapons laboratories supported by the United States — not near Russia’s borders, not anywhere,” she said.

There are two things wrong with this. First, the Security Council exists to “legitimize disinformation and deceive people.” That function is sort of baked into the membership and how the UNSC operates. So the question we all have to evaluate is a) which party is spreading disinformation and b) which people are targeted for deception. The second thing wrong with her argument is that after the “gain of function” research sponsored by Francis Collins, Anthony Fauci, and their merry band of psychopaths at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the ensuing global pandemic, no one in their right mind would believe any statement by anyone in the US government over our role in biological weapons research or much of anything else.

I know there are those who believe the hokum about biological warfare labs in Ukraine run or funded by the US military. I’m not one of them. The Russian government is trying to muddy the waters and spin an illegal and unprovoked attack on a non-threatening and weaker neighbor into a crusade to save humanity from a non-ending series of pandemics that were bought and paid for by the same people persecuting the noble Russian people right now. The attack will succeed with some on the far right who’ve managed to convince themselves that Russia is a guarantor of Western civilization because they’ve outlawed gay butt-sex while they were also outlawing free speech, free association, assassinating dissenters, etc. For most of the world, this is is just Russia being Russia, and it will mean nothing.

That said, it has become very obvious that various agencies of the federal government are running medical experiments overseas because they are afraid to run them in the United States. One mission of the next Republican in the White House should be to appoint a special counsel to investigate these activities and prosecute and incarcerate Collins and Fauci and anyone else involved.

As much as I loathe the Russian government and hope its hapless army gets bled white in Ukraine and Putin’s head ends up on a pike, I really have to admire what they are doing here. As the saying goes: don’t hate the player, hate the game.
