Salaam Remi Facts
- He has disclosed that his name Remi has come from the music scale do re mi. His father had not wanted him to deal with having the Gibbs on his last name and when Salaam had got into his craft, he had just dropped the Gibbs.
- Salaam has stated that he has felt blessed to have a jazz musician father and uncles, a singing mother and aunts, as well as a pastor grandfather. He has recalled that at the tender age of 3, he could play drums in local music stores along with his family, playing in perfect rhythm. He went on to play drums in church for some time and had continued playing throughout his high school.
- While growing up he had enjoyed learning drum machines and keyboards, prior to graduating to 4-tracks as well as samplers. He had constantly made demos and remixes before producing his debut album. As beat shopping and chopping started dominating his life, Salaam took an extended break from college in order to focus on music full-time.
- Remi has recollected that when he started going to LaGuardia Community, he had moved with his father who was working with top musicians of the day, that had provided Salaam the scope to learn a lot about Hip-Hop and get immersed into the core of what was occurring in the movement at the time. He had been able to benefit from just meeting everyone, and as he grew up, he was able to see firsthand all the things that drove the parties and the radio.
- Salaam has affirmed that he has always tried to bring out the best in the artists he has worked with. What he has gone into the studio with a specific musician his goal has been to ensure that something truly extraordinary would be created. He has also liked working with genuinely talented people who have a positive mindset, and he has aimed at being totally valuable to the artist and has also been willing to approach things differently to make it work, and never fixed a particular beat or sound to be followed. It has given him satisfaction to not only be able to transcend several generations, but also to have succeeded in tailoring his sound to each musician.
- He has cherished launching his campaign named Do it for the Culture where he has given his fans music to listen to for free, in large batches.
