A mum-of-four has taken to Facebook for advice on how to remove $3 Kmart chalk pens from her family blackboard – however there’s a simple explanation for her struggle.

The pack of chalk pens, despite the name, are actually not designed to be used on blackboards at all; instead they are used for making notes on slippery surfaces like glass and mirrors.

Australian mum Jess said she tried everything from magic erasers to scourers to remove the pen before finding success with rubbing alcohol

‘Do not use on porous surfaces such as wood, blackboards, painted walls, clothing and paper,’ the Kmart description reads.  

A number of parents suggested to Jess that Coca Cola, although it may sound unusual, Coke will completely remove chalk pen residue. 

‘I used to clean my old chalkboard wall with Coca Cola… Weird I know, but it works,’ a fellow mum wrote.

A number of parents who work at Bunnings Warehouse, Flower Power, fruit shops and bars have admitted that their workplace uses Coke to clean chalkboards as well. 

‘Sounds strange but we use Coke to clean blackboards off in fruit shop,’ one wrote.

‘When I used to work in pubs we did the same thing,’ another wrote.   

Despite this Jess eventually found success with rubbing alcohol and vowed to never use her pens on the blackboard again.
