Harry Edward Greenwell Biography
Who was Harry Edward Greenwell ?
Indiana State Police announced Tuesday that they used DNA evidence to link a dead suspect to a series of murders and attacks on motel employees in two states between 1987 and 1990.
Harry Edward Greenwell has been named as the “I-65 killer” who murdered three women and raped another at motels along Interstate 65 in Indiana and Kentucky decades ago, authorities said Monday.
“Greenwell had an extensive criminal history and had been in and out of prison several times, including breaking out of jail on two separate occasions,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield told a news conference.
“He was known to travel frequently in the Midwest.”
Forensic evidence linked Greenwell to the murder of 41-year-old Vicki Heath in 1987, and to the murders of 24-year-old Margaret “Peggy” Gill and 24-year-old Jeanne Gilbert in 1989.
Heath was shot while working the night shift at a Super 8 hotel in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Gill and Gilbert were shot and raped on the same day while working shifts at two different Indiana Day Inns located 50 miles apart.
The suspected serial killer also s*xually assaulted a 21-year-old woman while working at an Indiana Days Inn a year later, investigators said.

Victims
“This victim was able to escape her attacker and survive. He was later able to give an excellent physical description of the suspect and details of the crime,” Fifield said.
“She is the only known victim to survive the brutal and vicious attacks of this killer.”
The genealogy of the investigation led the police to declare with 99.9999% certainty that Greenwell was responsible for all four crimes.
Family
Gilbert’s daughter joined officials at the news conference, saying the development had brought a kind of closure for her family.
“She is still in the hearts of my family,” said Kimberly Gilbert Wright. “We talk about her as if she hadn’t left. My brother and I were fortunate to have spent the last seven months of her life living with her and experiencing the joy that each day of our lives could bring.”
There was a “distinct possibility” that Greenwell had committed other crimes, and detectives were reaching out to other departments in the Midwest with cold cases to see if she was connected to them.
