Who is Peter Hayball ?
A pub owner who said he enjoyed ‘Carry On’-style banter with staff and customers groped three of his waitresses by putting cash in their bras.
Peter Hayball, nicknamed ‘Perverted Pete’ by the local women who used to drink in his pub, was found guilty of s*xually assaulting three of his female employees.
The 56-year-old also made lewd comments and became obsessed with her breasts.
She was jailed for a total of 18 months at Exeter Crown Court today.
Registrar Christopher Quinlan QC said Hayball pulled down women’s blouses and tried to shove cash into his bras when he was alone with them after shifts.
The judge said: “You clearly took advantage of your position as an employer and created a situation where the two of you were alone.”
He said Hayball agreed to make s*xual comments and one victim said he looked at her breasts a lot while talking to her.
She said Hayball told her, ‘I bet you’re good in the bedroom.’
The court heard that she touched the bare breasts of two of the waitresses and the third woman blocked her hand from doing so, when she shoved cash into her blouse that she had lowered.
One victim said that she loved being a waitress, but that she felt useless because he was in a position of power and paid them to work.
He has not returned to work in bars.
A second woman said she felt ‘well and truly abused’, a third said she felt vulnerable and a fourth she felt distraught and anxious and she couldn’t ignore the effects.
Arrested and Charged
Hayball, from South Chard, Somerset, had denied 13 s*xual assault charges against four different women between 2016 and 2018.

He was convicted of three counts of s*xual assault and acquitted of the other 10 counts of s*xual assault.
Prosecutor Mary McCarthy said the women worked for Hayball when he ran a Devon pub and mobile bar, but did not complain to police at the time, although two left over his behaviour.
He denied deliberate touching when he was interviewed by police, but said there had been some innocent “horseplay” with one of the women.
She claimed that the accusations were fabricated, that any contact was accidental or that his ‘innuendoes’ were misunderstood.
She told the jury that one of his accusers had ‘thrown his breasts into my hands’ while he said he wanted breast augmentation, and another uncovered his breasts while he ‘made the glasses’.
Hayball said he used the humor of “Carry On,” a reference to s*xually innuendo comedy films of 50 years ago, to talk to staff and customers, but said he never got beyond a joke.
He claimed it was just “roughplay” in a pub setting, but said he was a gentleman who was afraid of being politically correct.
Miss McCarthy said the publican carried out a “campaign of opportunistic s*xual assaults against female members of staff while they were at work”.
She said the touching was “often preceded by s*xual comments about her breasts or wanting to touch her breasts or something like that.”
Emily Cook, defending, said Hayball still maintains his innocence, but that he is sorry for the victims’ discomfort and accepts that he needs to “address his behavior with women.”
A former client said: ‘He was a creep. He looked at you and said things to you when you approached the bar. I just ignored it. But he was known as Perverted Pete.
