Kerr says he returned to training the day after learning of his father’s death.
Kerr, who was 19 years old at the time of his father’s death and already a star at the University of Arizona, is a vocal opponent of the unrestricted right to bear weapons in the United States and has been a vocal opponent of school and shopping mall shootings for years.
Meet Steve Karr Mother Ann Zwicker Kerr
Steve Kerr was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 27, 1965, as one of Ann Zwicker and Malcolm H. Kerr’s four children.
His father enrolled in an Arabic studies master’s degree at the American University of Beirut, which he completed in 1955. There he met his wife, Ann.
Kerr spent the majority of his childhood in Beirut and other Middle Eastern cities. Before going to America to attend Palisades High School, he attended Cairo American College in Egypt as well as the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon (now Palisades Charter High School).
He became interested in basketball and played for the Palisades Dolphins while there.

Steve Karr has three siblings. Susan is his sister, and John and Andrew are his brothers. Since the 1920s, his family had lived in Beirut.
Stanley and Elsa Kerr, his paternal grandparents, volunteered for Near East Relief in the Middle East. Malcolm, his father, was a professor at the American University of Beirut before becoming its president.
In 1985, Steve Kerr met his future wife, Margot. They were both University of Arizona students when they met on a blind date set up by a mutual acquaintance. The pair married on September 15, 1990, after dating for nearly five years.
They have three children together: Nick and Matthew, two sons, and Madeleine, a daughter. Julie Davenport is a close family friend of Kerr’s.
