Who was Scaffolder Shane Jerome?
Scaffolder Shane Jerome, 23, was stabbed to death outside Brixton Station in south London while sitting on a motorcycle as part of filming on July 21 last year.
Lamborghini sports cars and a quad bike also appear in the film.Jerome was on his Yamaha NT7 motorcycle waiting at traffic lights between a bus and a lime green Lamborghini.
Charged
Brandon McNeil, 19, rode a Santander bike in the opposite direction of traffic before jumping out, holding a Rambo-style knife in the air and using it to stab Mr. Jerome in the chest.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, but Jerome had been stabbed through the heart and could not be saved.
McNeil admitted to murder, intent to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon.
He made rap videos bragging about his criminal life and showed off his skill with knives in a movie made a week after the murder.
Wearing a gray sweater and round glasses, McNeil appeared at the Old Bailey today to receive a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years in jail.
Family
Judge Sarah Munro, QC, told him: ‘Shane Jerome was adored by his family, by his longtime girlfriend and by his friends, many of whom are here today to pay their respects and see you punished for snuffing out his life.
He had no convictions and, unlike you, there is not a shred of evidence that he was involved in any criminal or gang activity.
“Loved ones are here today and their pain is tangible in this courtroom.”
The judge referred to the courage of Jerome’s girlfriend, Seleka Gathercole, who spoke in court about what had happened.
She had to go through the unspeakable horror of seeing you kill the love of her life before her eyes.
‘She was right there.
‘They planned to get married and they planned very soon to start a family.
Killed
“That is but a snapshot of the young man you killed and the impact of what you did on those who knew and loved him.”
Regarding McNeil’s actions, Judge Munro continued: “You, on the other hand, are wrapped up in the gang culture that is endemic in parts of this city.”
You stabbed him in the heart.
‘You were on the attack and acting with complete and free will.’
Investigation
The judge added: ‘You are closely associated with the ‘7’ or ‘L’ gang. The police investigation has uncovered his interest, if not his obsession, with lethal weapons and violence.
‘You have made recordings where you have recorded rap lyrics that glorify carrying knives and using them to kill your rivals.
One of those videos was uploaded less than a week before the murder. Your Instagram account is in your gang’s name and contains pictures of you proudly brandishing knives in familiar gang territory, just like the gun you used to kill Shane.
“Even more chilling, a week after the murder, three videos were recorded on your phone of you playing with knives and bragging about your skill with them. A fourth video was from the crime scene after the murder that had been sent to him.
‘Also. you had a deadly collection of deadly knives in your house.
Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow
Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC told the court that the music video involved a convoy of vehicles driving in a circuit around Brixton Market.
On that route, the group invaded the territory of a local street gang to which McNeil belonged.
At seventeen minutes past eight that night, while the vehicles were stopped at traffic lights at Brixton station, the convoy was attacked by a group of five men.
“It was clearly planned as the attackers attacked the vehicles and their occupants.
“McNeil stabbed him to death with a big Rambo-style knife.”
The killer tried to stab another victim, Romain Gayle, sitting on the quad, but missed.
Attack
“The surprise attack was over as quickly as it started,” Mr Glasgow continued.
“Terrified participants in the shoot ran for their lives.”
CCTV of the attack was played in court.
“Shane tried to back away but he couldn’t go very far,” the prosecutor said.
‘The defendant charged at Shane with a knife in the air ready to attack.
“There was simply nothing he could do to prevent the attack.”
Jerome collapsed for an ambulance and was treated by a doctor and nurse who were there.
“By the time the emergency ambulance and helicopter arrived, Shane had lost a significant amount of blood,” Mr Glasgow said.
He was lying in a pool of blood and a trail of blood was behind him on the road.
“It was so severe that it was possible to see into his chest cavity.
“Nothing could be done to save Shane Jerome and he was pronounced dead at 8:45 that night.”
There was no “evidence” to suggest that Mr. Jerome had anything to do with gangs or gang violence.
He worked as a scaffolder and had a passion for motorcycles.
His father, Sean Jerome, said that he ‘adored’ his only child from the day he was born.
“I was always by his side doing all the things that loving parents do.
“As a parent, I have never been out of my children’s lives: the hard times and the good times. I miss the little things.
“I know everyone says they bond with their children, but to me, Shane was like the other half of me.”
Victim
Dawn Jerome, the victim’s mother, unleashed a tirade against McNeil.
I feel that you are not fit for society.
You have taken the most precious gift a mother could have had.
You took her life and all the hopes and dreams she had in life are gone.
“You have deprived us as a family of a future with our son and grandchildren.
You took his life and destroyed ours.
‘The sentence you receive today will never be the one you served with us.’
The 23-year-old’s girlfriend, Mrs Gathercole, said McNeil’s actions had broken her heart.
Judge Sarah Munro said:
Nothing I can do today can bring Shane back or heal the lifelong pain and sorrow you have inflicted on his family and loved ones.
She told the court that McNeil had made several recordings and photos, discovered by police, of him rapping about killing and playing with knives.
She said: ‘You’ve made recordings where you’ve recorded rap lyrics that glorify carrying knives and using them to kill your rivals. One of those videos was uploaded less than a week before the murder.

Mr. Jerome’s family sat in court and cried during the proceedings. Several stood up as McNeil, of Lollard Street, Vauxhall, south London, was sentenced.
Several family members testified in court, including her mother, Dawn, who explained how the murder had left her in “unbearable pain”.
