Sorana Cîrstea Facts
- Sorana was introduced to the sport of tennis by her mother Liliana when she was 4 years old.
- In April 2007, at the Budapest Grand Prix, she had reached the final of an event (either singles or doubles) on the WTA Tour for the first time in her career. She had become the first Romanian to reach a WTA Tour final since Ruxandra Dragomir in June 2000.
- In October 2008, she won her first singles title on the WTA Tour at the Tashkent Open. At the end of that calendar year, she had reached a new career-high singles world ranking of 36. This had made her the number one ranked Romanian female player, at the age of just 18.
- At the 2009 French Open, she had reached the quarter-final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. At the tournament, she had defeated 2 players ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official WTA singles rankings, in successive matches – then world number 10 Caroline Wozniacki in the 3rd round and then world number 5 Jelena Janković in the 4th round.
- In August 2013, at the Rogers Cup, she had reached a final in the singles format on the WTA Tour for the first time in nearly 5 years. At the tournament, she had defeated 3 players ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official WTA singles rankings – then world number 10 Caroline Wozniacki in the 2nd round, then world number 7 Petra Kvitová in the quarter-final, and then world number 5 Li Na in the semi-final. Consequently, she had reached her peak career singles world ranking of 21.
- In April 2014, she won both her singles matches to help Romania defeat Serbia 4–1 in the World Group II Play-offs of the Fed Cup (the premier tournament between national teams in women’s tennis). The win helped Romania earn a promotion to World Group II of the Fed Cup.
- When Sorana entered Australia to participate in the 2021 edition of the Australian Open, she had to enter a hard quarantine because a fellow passenger on her flight had tested positive for COVID-19. A warm-up tournament, called the Grampians Trophy, had been organized for the players affected by this hard quarantine. There, in her match against Ann Li, she was involved in an unusual incident where she requested a code violation from the umpire for coaching. This was because she was irritated by her coaches’ repeated comments toward her.
- The 2021 İstanbul Cup was her first singles title on the WTA Tour since her triumph at the 2008 Tashkent Open. She had not dropped a set throughout the entire tournament. After this win, she had risen to number 58 in the official WTA singles rankings, her highest ranking since October 2018.
- In January 2022, she had recorded the first ‘double bagel’ match (the feat of winning a match with a scoreline of 6–0, 6–0) of her singles career on the WTA Tour. She had thrashed Varvara Gracheva in 49 minutes in the 1st round of the tournament.
- A polyglot, she is fluent in Romanian, English, and Spanish, and can speak a bit of French.
