Tom Hanks thrilled a group of Australian fans when he showed off his Aussie accent last week.

The Hollywood superstar took the stage at the premiere of Elvis on the Gold Coast and rattled off some Down Under lingo.

The 65-year-old shared a conversation he had a with a man he called Dan Murphy – perhaps jokingly referring to the local alcohol retail chain – and dropped in various Australian pronunciations throughout.

‘What a man, what a man, that Dan Murphy is. Dan Murphy, who I got to know quite well I might add, explained to me when it is time to go swimming here on the Gold Coast,’ Tom told the amused crowd.

‘It is time to go swimming when there absolutely are no blueys (stinging Bluebottle jellyfish) in the water,’ he went on to laughter from the audience.

‘It is time to go swimming absolutely when there’s no men in grey suits (sharks) in the water. And it’s time to go swimming when there is no rip in the water. I never went swimming once, because all those things were always in the water!’

He continued: ‘If you don’t know where we shot our film, it’s very easy. You just get in your car, and you head towards to Brisbane, and you turn left at Topgolf, and that’s where we went to shoot our film,’ he joked, again testing his Aussie accent.

Tom and the cast of Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic filmed the movie in Queensland in 2020.

The film follows Elvis from his childhood poverty through his emergence as a global superstar before his untimely death at the age of just 42 in 1977.

It stars Tom as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, who was infamous for cheating the music icon out of a fair share of royalties for his songs.

The actor believes that his alter ego should be recognised for his part in making Elvis a megastar.

Hanks said: ‘I’ve heard from many people that he was a delightful guy, lit up every room. Was he a cheap crook who played fast and loose with the money? Yeah, (but) he brought joy to everything he did. With just a little bit of larceny.’

‘Baz said there was no Elvis without Colonel Tom Parker, it was a completely symbiotic relationship.’
