Who is Aurel Birlan ?
A predatory rapist who attacked a woman as she lay unconscious for more than an hour was today sentenced to life in prison.
Aurel Birlan, 44, subjected his victim to a ‘brutal and vicious’ assault on the street and only stopped when he was challenged by a brave bystander.
Birlan, from Chatham, Kent, was caught on CCTV repeatedly raping the woman as she begged him to stop during the incident in December last year.
Attack
Her horrific attack only came to an end when a car pulled into a Kent town center car park and noticed the victim.
The driver interrupted the s*x offender after noticing that the woman was partially nude, not moving, and appeared to be injured.
He then questioned Birlan about what happened, and the father of three claimed that she had simply fallen asleep in his arms.
Victim
But the witness did not believe her story and waited with the s*x offender and his victim until the police arrived.
Birlan was arrested at the scene by police and charged with two counts of rape and three counts of s*xual assault.
Prosecutor Hanna Llewellyn-Waters told Maidstone Crown Court that the woman does not remember what happened to her that night.
Half an hour before Birlan approached him in the street, he had fallen face-first off a bench and was lying on the ground for 20 minutes.
He managed to get to his feet and stumbled to another bench, before falling onto the path and continuing to lie there until Birland approached him at 10:35 p.m.

She was already bloodied and bruised, breathing shallowly and suffering from mild hypothermia when Birlan launched the attack on her.
When he was arrested, Birlan claimed that he and the woman had consensual s*x, but then she had fallen unconscious and he stayed with her to make sure he was okay.
The court heard that Birlan came to the UK around five years ago, working in the recycling, fruit and construction industries, and has no prior convictions.
He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and was yesterday sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of eight years and three months before he is eligible for parole.
The rapist was added to the s*x offender registry for life and subject to a restraining order, which prohibits him from contacting the victim.
Investigation
Investigating officer, Kent Police Detective Sergeant Kendal Moore, said: “Birlan put his victim through a prolonged and truly harrowing ordeal, only stopping when a bystander bravely intervened.
“Hopefully today’s sentencing will allow the victim to live a normal life, knowing that at least this dangerous man is now behind bars.”
He has shown tremendous dignity and courage throughout this investigation and I want to congratulate him on that.
