She held the Commerce and Transport portfolios under the BJP-BJD coalition government that came to power in 2000, and then the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry positions after that. Even though the BJP was defeated by the by-then estranged BJD in 2009, she was able to win.
Murmu was elected as a Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat councilor in 1997. She was also the vice-president of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
