1. He has described his upbringing as a privileged one and he spent 8 years of his childhood in the upper-class Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood in Kabul.
2. Khaled Hosseini shifted to Iran with his family in 1970 as his father worked for the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tehran.
3. The family returned to Kabul in 1973 and then relocated to Paris, France when he was 11 years of age after his father got a job there. Afterward, the family could not come back to Afghanistan because of the April 1978 Saur Revolution in which the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) seized power.
4. His family sought political asylum in the United States after the start of the Soviet-Afghan War and made their residence in San Jose, California.
5. Khaled Hosseini did not speak English when his family first arrived in the United States and he has described the experience as “a culture shock” and “very alienating”.
