Shamarh Brooks Facts
- Shamarh, a teenage cricketing prodigy, had joined the first-class set-up of his home country Barbados in 2007. He remained with the Barbados national team for the next few years but could never really realize his full potential.
- After a particularly poor 2012, where he could score just 76 runs at a lowly average of 8.44, he was dropped from the team. He played his next first-class match only in 2015 but made a big impact upon his return as he recorded his maiden first-class century. Over the next 5 years, he scored 3,091 runs at a steady average of 38.63, including 5 centuries and 20 half-centuries.
- His journey toward senior international cricket began in 2016 when he began captaining the ‘West Indies A’ squad in unofficial test matches. In 2018, in a series against ‘India A’ that was held in England, he scored 91 runs in the first match and 121 runs not out in the second match to finish as the highest run-scorer in that series.
- In July and August 2019, he was named the captain of the ‘West Indies A’ squad for the last of 3 unofficial test matches against ‘India A’. However, after Kraigg Brathwaite, the player who had been appointed the captain for the first 2 matches of the series, sustained an injury, Shamarh stepped in to serve as the captain in the first 2 matches of the series as well.
- He led by example, recording half-centuries in both of the first 2 matches of that series. Consequently, he was included in the West Indies’ test match squad for their 2-match home bilateral series against India. He made his test match (and international) debut in the first match of that series. It was a rather forgettable occasion though as he could score just 13 runs in the match as the West Indies were handed a rather heavy defeat by India – 318 runs.
