Achinta Sheuli Facts

  1. Born into a lower-middle-class family, Achinta endured his fair share of struggles in his childhood and youth. He started weightlifting in 2011, inspired by his older brother, but his world came crashing down in April 2013 when his father passed away.
  2. His older brother had to give up his dream of becoming a champion weightlifter so that he could somehow support him and their mother. Achinta’s mother began working several odd jobs to make ends meet and eventually started doing zari (zari is an even thread traditionally made of fine gold/silver and used in traditional Indian garments, especially as brocade in saris) work locally.
  3. Achinta’s older brother also began working contractually to support the family while Achinta continued to train for weightlifting and would help out his mother and brother with their work, whenever possible.
  4. His fortunes changed when he participated in the Youth National Games held in the state of Haryana and secured the 3rd position. He then grabbed further attention when he won the Junior National Weightlifting Tournament in 2013 in the 50 kg weight class.
  5. This feat saw him get invited to train at the Army Sports Institute (a multi-disciplinary facility that imparts training in archery, athletics, boxing, diving, wrestling, fencing, and weightlifting) in Pune, Maharashtra, in 2014.
  6. Around this time, he was also appointed to the post of ‘Havildar’ (equivalent to sergeant) in the Indian Army through the sports quota. This helped his family out tremendously in financial terms and also afforded him sufficient time to focus fully on weightlifting.
  7. At the 2018 Asian Youth Championships, he won the ‘Silver’ medal.
