Who is Naomi Heffernan ?
A Team GB athlete is fighting for his life after fracturing his skull and suffering multiple brain bleeds when he was “hit by a car” while riding a bike.
Decathlete Ben Gregory, 31, who has competed for Great Britain and also Wales at three Commonwealth Games, is in a coma following the accident, his devastated girlfriend revealed today.
His girlfriend Naomi Heffernan says she “has never been so scared” and that he needs “positive thoughts and prayers.”
She wrote: ‘Ben had a serious bike accident. He has a fractured skull, neck and multiple hemorrhages in the brain. He is in a coma and on life support.
His injuries occurred after he was hit by a car on Friday, British Olympian Kelly Sotherton confirmed.

Details of the accident came just two days after Mr. Gregory teased Instagram with some “exciting news” that he hoped to share soon, accompanied by a video of himself working out on a treadmill.
The athlete’s post details how he completed warning and running drills and an upper body and hamstring workout. He then did a cool-down routine that consisted of a four-minute run and a one-minute walk at what Mr. Gregory described as a “sexy cruising pace.”
He also included ‘#train’ in his post, suggesting that he may have been preparing for an upcoming event.
Ms. Heffernan said on Sunday that she “has never felt so scared, helpless and sick to her stomach.”
‘Ben needs positive thoughts and prayers right now. Those who know Ben know how strong he is mentally and physically, he is a fighter and he will come through.
‘Please pray for him and send all the positive energy and thoughts you can muster.’
In another post, Ms. Heffernan said that she knew “this is going to be a long road to recovery” but that she has faith that he “is going to pull through.”
“I hope he knows more on Monday when they put him on a sedative,” she explained. “His reaction to that will tell which way this goes.”

Ms. Heffernan promised to continue to provide social media updates of hers and thanked everyone for her “lovely messages and kind words.”
She even noted that she planned to read the allowed messages to Mr. Gregory when she saw him.
Statement
Welsh Athletics director James Williams shared his wishes for Gregory’s recovery on Twitter.
Welsh Athletics said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ben’s friends and family at this time.
“Ben’s achievements as an athlete speak for themselves: Welsh’s best decathlonist – three Commonwealth Games, Welsh record holder and representative for Wales and Great Britain on multiple occasions.
“The outpouring of support on social media is a testament to how popular he is as a person and as an athlete.
“Everyone who has had the privilege to train or compete alongside Ben will speak of his incredible love for life, his kindness, support and loyalty.
“We will all continue to pray for a full recovery for Ben.”
“I hope he recovers,” said fellow Welshman and former 400m hurdles world champion Dai Greene. “One of the nicest and most positive people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being on the track with.”
Another Welsh athlete and decathlete, Curtis Mathews, said: “He is a very special man, he brings joy to everyone around him and deserves nothing less than the best in life. I can’t describe how much I hope this champion comes through because he, honestly, he is the best of us.”
Gregory has represented Wales at three Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at other events as well.
In October 2020, Gregory managed to escape serious injury in another bike accident.
