Who is Bobby Swartz ?

An Oklahoma sheriff broke down in tears as he spoke of the loss of one of his deputies, who was shot and killed while serving an eviction notice.

Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson became emotional Monday while speaking to reporters about his fallen officer, Sergeant Bobby Swartz, who was the first officer shot to death in the county since 1935.

Swartz has been in law enforcement since 1997 and served in the Army Reserves before that. He also received an award for saving a man hit by a truck in 2020 while off duty and was recently promoted to sergeant in March.

“Police are a tight-knit community and I’m so thankful they yelled for my boys,” Johnson said as he sobbed and walked away from the camera.

Suspect

Swartz and another officer, who has not been identified, were shot by suspected shooter Benjamin Plank Monday while serving him an eviction notice.

Although the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD), which is investigating the incident, has not officially released Plank’s name, law enforcement sources told DailyMail.com on Tuesday that his identity was ” fair to say.”

Swartz, along with two other officers, arrived at the Southwest 78th Street residence around 1:15 p.m. m. Monday after a family member filed a victim protection order against Plank last month, according to KFOR.

The unidentified landlord reportedly attempted to evict Plank for owing $1,500 in back rent, and a judge granted the eviction order this week.

Officers made contact with Plank at the front door before moving to the back door, where he reportedly opened fire. It is not clear why they moved to the back of the house.

“They went around the back door, and that’s when the shooting started,” Johnson said at the news conference. ‘[The suspect] shot the first officer. The second officer tried to move that officer out of the way of the shots, and then he was hit as well.

At least one officer returned fire, according to OKCPD Capt. Valerie Littlejohn.

After wounding the officers, Plank reportedly left in a van towing a boat and led police on a chase to Tinker Air Force Base, where he surrendered.

The suspect allegedly shot at police while he was driving on I-35 before surrendering. No other officers were injured.

It’s not clear why he drove to the Air Force base. He was seen a swarm of officers, all wearing protective vests, pulling a plank shirtless in the back of an unmarked police van.

Murder

Plank has been booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on suspicion of first-degree murder, shooting with intent to kill, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and use of a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon, according to KFOR.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that it will leave a patrol vehicle at 2101 NE 36th Street for anyone wishing to leave a message for the fallen Sgt.

“We understand that the community is sharing in our loss and we appreciate your prayers and kind words,” the office wrote.

Gov. Kevin Stitt also wrote that he had spoken with Johnson and offered his condolences to the force.

Family

“We are praying for the family of the fallen deputy and for the deputy who continues to fight for his life,” he wrote on Twitter. ‘I am grateful for the swift actions by @OHPDPS and @OKCPD to prevent further loss of life. Today and every day, Oklahoma stands with our law enforcement community.’

Tinker Air Force Base also wrote a statement, writing, “Our condolences and prayers go out to members of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department and the families of the officer who lost his life today and the officer who was injured.”

Several other local law enforcement officials also offered their condolences to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
