A woman who had her drink spiked by friends at a barbecue party, has revealed she’s still upset about the incident almost a year later.

Writing anonymously on UK online forum Mumsnet, the woman explained that her friends made her some alcoholic cocktails without her knowledge, because they thought she was boring.

She said that she believed she’d been drinking soft drinks throughout the night and was unaware her friends would try to get her drunk, when she asked for a mocktail.

Revealing her friends didn’t admit to spiking her drink until she had finished five cocktails, the woman received a flood of responses from people urging her to end the friendship.

Reflecting on the situation, the woman wrote: ‘So this actually happened last summer but it’s been playing on my mind lately.

‘Basically I was at a BBQ at a friends house and pretty much everyone was drinking. I’m not a big drinker and was sticking to soft drinks that night. No reason other than that’s what I wanted to do. My friends were all drinking cocktails and they asked if I wanted them to make me some non alcoholic ones. Turns out they were alcoholic. I didn’t realise as I couldn’t taste the alcohol.

‘After about four or five I realised I was starting to feel drunk and confronted them. They confessed and we all ended up arguing. One friend in particular was quite nasty saying I was always boring and they just wanted me to have fun for a change.

‘I left and things have never been quite the same since.

‘I was upset because they broke my trust. I was my decision to drink or not, and I don’t think I should be considered boring because I don’t want to get drunk.

‘Also, they had no way of knowing if I had another reason for not drinking. What if I’d been pregnant or on medication? AIBU to still feel upset about this nearly a year later?’

A stream of responses argued the woman’s friends are ‘childish’ and explained why she should never talk to them again.

One person wrote: ‘That’s really bad. What if you were pregnant or on medication? Or an alcoholic? Alcohol with some medicines can be fatal! Your friends said you’re boring for not drinking.

‘That clearly means that they don’t like you. I’m tee total by choice. If that happened to me, then I wouldn’t bother with them again. You can’t trust them to give you a drink. What if you drove home after a couple!’

Another said: ‘Wow – these aren’t friends OP, they took a huge gamble with your health to give themselves a laugh. As you say, you could have been pregnant or taking antibiotics etc. I’m not sure I could forgive ‘friends’ for that.

A third added: ‘You’re not being unreasonable because you haven’t dealt with it yet. That they thought it was a good idea says volume about them being “friends”. It’s no different to having your drink spiked with illegal drugs. Walk away from those people.’

Others argued the woman’s friends behaved poorly but they wouldn’t still be upset a year later.

‘It’s a really s**** thing to do and I’d probably distance myself from these so called friends from now on. However I don’t think I’d still be upset about it almost a year later,’ one wrote.

Another agreed that while it was a horrible thing to do, she should move on.

She said: ‘It happened. You were fine. You learnt what they were like. I’d be glad that I found out they were lying idiots in a safe environment. It could have been much worse. It wasn’t.’

Others argued they would've been upset at the time and the situation could've been worse, but they wouldn't still be upset
