Killed

His partner, Darryleen Koolmatrie, 23, was killed in the accident, just three weeks after giving birth to their baby.

Penny was driving 112 km/h in a 70 km/h zone at 11:20 the morning of the accident and lost control of the car.

She slid sideways for about 50 meters before crashing into a concrete median strip and flying into the air.

The passenger side then crashed into the wooden post, snapping it in half.

Accident and Condition

She had been raining before the accident and it was later revealed that the car’s front left and right rear tires were below the minimum safe tread depth.

Penny told the court that she was unaware of the condition of the tires before the accident.

Her license had also expired for four years at the time of the accident, and tests revealed that she had been driving with a combination of prescription drugs and marijuana in her system.

‘I remember I came around the corner and it just slid, it just slid, you know? The tires were worn out and I couldn’t get them back, Penny said after the accident, according to WA Police today.

Her attorney, Patti Chong, called the accident “a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.”

Victim

“The criminal not only killed any innocent bystanders or victims, he killed the love of his life, the mother of her three-month-old son,” she said.

It was reckless of him to drive when his license was suspended. It was reckless of him to get into a car that was unroadworthy, with tires below the legal tread limit.

“It was reckless of him to drive as fast as he did up a steep hill in rainy conditions. It was a tragedy waiting to happen and it did.”

He also told the court that the stretch of road where Penny crashed had seen another 25 accidents that year and that road safety in the area was incredibly poor.

Judge Charlotte Wallace said Penny was “genuinely remorseful and consumed with her own grief” and she had shown empathy for the victim’s family.

Your driving had devastating consequences. You took a human life, she said.

“I accept that, of course, it was never his intention to kill or even injure her partner by driving the way she did.

“However, that is inevitably the case when someone is convicted of this type of crime.”

In response, Joyleen Koolmatrie described her granddaughter as “a compassionate young woman,” while her father, John Blurton, said her life was “empty and lonely” without her daughter.

While she was out of court, she described the sentence as “disgusting”.

‘She only got two years (before parole). I have a lifetime, her son has a lifetime, ”she said.

Blurton said that he had been reunited with his daughter after 20 years and that he was “really happy.”

“Then all of a sudden, three years later, they took her away,” he said.
