Ginni Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, has agreed to be interviewed by the January 6 committee. The committee and Ginni Thomas came to an agreement that she will speak with them in the coming weeks. Her attorney, Mark Paoletta, confirmed it is a voluntary interview.

“As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas is eager to answer the Committee’s questions to clear up any misconceptions about her work relating to the 2020 election. She looks forward to that opportunity.”

The back and forth between Thomas’ attorney and the committee went on throughout the summer and now looks like the time has come to put it all behind her. The committee is allegedly interested in questioning her about text messages and phone calls to Mark Meadows prior to the events of January 6. At the time, Meadows was Trump’s White House chief of staff. However, the committee didn’t seem to be too eager to bring her in for an interview.

After the text messages came to light, other evidence surfaced that Ginni Thomas spoke with state lawmakers in Arizona and Wisconsin about questioning Biden’s electoral win, allegedly. Since the committee was slow-walking her interview, Paoletta sent a letter to the committee in June. He told the members that he didn’t “believe there is currently a sufficient basis to speak with” Thomas. He asked for better justification as to why she should be interviewed. He asked, What is the relevance of testimony from her to the committee?

That letter from Paoletta followed a June 16 letter from the committee asking Ginni to meet with the panel in July. The committee asked for any relevant documents to the investigation to be turned over.

The committee has email correspondence between Thomas and former President Donald Trump’s election attorney John Eastman, as well as texts between her and Meadows. The texts show Thomas urging Meadows to continue the fight to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Thomas’ lawyer said in the June letter his client was “willing to appear” and “eager to clear her name,” but that without more information from the committee, he feared that she had been asked to come in “to continue the baseless harassment she has been subjected to since January 6.”

“There is no story to uncover here,” he said in the letter.

It’s unclear what documents the committee expects Thomas to turn over at this point. It already has the text messages she sent to Meadows and his responses. The committee knows she encouraged Meadows to question the election results. So what? It is easy to see why her attorney complained about baseless harassment of Thomas. She is not an elected official. She doesn’t work for the government. She’s a lobbyist and has been for years. What she is, though, is the wife of a conservative justice who the progressives would very much like to force to recuse himself should any January 6 committee-related cases come before the Supreme Court.

The committee can’t punish Ginni Thomas for something she didn’t do. What do they think she did, anyway? They have the documentation of her communications prior to January 6. She has already confirmed that she attended the Trump rally on January 6 but didn’t help plan it and left before it was over that day. She certainly didn’t participate in the riot on Capitol Hill that day. And she has repeatedly said she does not involve her husband in her political activism. She is a private citizen and entitled to the same rights as any other.

“Like so many married couples, we share many of the same ideals, principles and aspirations for America,” Thomas told the Free Beacon. “But we have our own separate careers, and our own ideas and opinions too,” she said.

“Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me, and I don’t involve him in my work,” she said.

Spoken like any other professional woman who works independently and has her own activities going on. This interview is political theatre for the sake of a failing committee who hasn’t conducted itself as a regular committee would in D.C. and the general public has little interest in it. Republicans have not had fair representation on the committee, as they normally would in an investigation. Pelosi chose two Never Trump Republicans with grudges to bear and they are the only Republicans on the committee.

Ginni Thomas’ interview will likely be a waste of time but it will garner some publicity for the committee, which is their real purpose here anyway. They hope to make it impossible for Trump to run again for president. That is their goal. I don’t think the committee will get the final word on that, though.
