Who is Hilaree Nelson ?
A celebrated American mountain climber is missing after scaling a Himalayan mountain and falling into a crevasse 15 minutes later while skiing down.
Hilaree Nelson, 49, disappeared Monday morning while she was skiing at Mount Manaslu with her boyfriend, Jim Morrison. She continued to base camp to report her missing, but rescue attempts have been hampered by bad weather, which means helicopters are unable to access the extremely high and remote site.
Elsewhere on the mountain, at least one person was killed in an avalanche on Monday and 12 people were trapped, four of them seriously injured, according to reports.
An eyewitness to Nelson’s descent told The Himalaya Times that she fell about 80 feet into a vertical crevasse, which was 2,000 feet deep. It was not known if she survived the initial fall.
Nelson, based in Telluride, Colo., lives with her sons Quinn, 15, and Graydon, 13; the children live with Nelson’s ex-husband while she is away.
She was the first woman to scale two 8,000-meter peaks, Everest and Lhotse, in a 24-hour push.
Missing

Morrison echoed Nelson, saying his attempt at the top was difficult, but the comeback was a joy.
She returned to Nepal in 2018 with Morrison, and the pair became the first to successfully ski Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest peak at 27,940 feet.
They then decided to ski down another 8,000 meter peak, Manaslu, which is not a record attempt but is still considered extremely challenging.
On Friday, Nelson and Morrison tried to reach the summit, but failed.
“I have not felt as safe in Manaslu as I have in past adventures in the thin atmosphere of the high Himalayas,” Nelson posted on Instagram.
‘These last few weeks have tested my resilience in new ways. The constant monsoon with its incessant rain and humidity has made me hopelessly long. I am challenged to find peace and inspiration on the mountain when it has been constantly shrouded in mist.

‘Yesterday we ended our bid for the summit when we decided it was too dangerous to go from C3 to C4.
“Subsequently we decided to ski from C3 knowing that it would mean taking our skis all the way back up the mountain if, if here, we try again to get to the top. It was the best thing we could have done.
Morrison also documented the failed attempt on Friday.
“We climbed high and tried hard, but the mountain said no,” he wrote.
‘Tails between the legs we jumped off camp 3 and headed down (on skis).
“What we weren’t prepared for was the exhilaration of skiing. I love to ski pow. At home and at 7000 meters.
“We ski down to base camp, have some @tincupwhiskey and our smiles from ear to ear are back.
‘My skis were amazing in some wild conditions and I really hope we can ski from the top this time.’
Nelson’s friends, family, colleagues and admirers prayed for a miracle and his safe return.
