Who is Gerald Highgate ?

A pedophile soccer coach has been jailed for ten years after abusing eight boys, aged just 11, between 1966 and 2000.

Gerald Highgate, 83, who was a serial s*x offender abusing for over three decades, appeared today at Guilford Crown Court in Surrey.


The victims said that he had destroyed his childhood and that he used his love of soccer against him.

Judge Micahel Hunter told the s*xual predator: “You groomed children, possibly as young as 11 years old, over a very long period from 1966 to 2000, a period of 34 years.

“If he had admitted to these crimes and spared his victims the trauma of appearing in court and testifying at this trial, he would have substantially reduced his sentence.”

Gerald Highgate, 83, was jailed for ten years today at Guilford Crown Court after being charged with 30 offenses against eight boys, aged just 11, between 1966 and 2000.

Highgate, who trained at Chipstead FC and the Surrey club’s Bletchingley Rifle Club, where he committed 30 offenses against eight boys.


He was convicted after a six week trial.

Catherine Donnelly of The Crown told the jury: “Highgate appears to have been adept at grooming both adults and children and he appears to have behaved in this way for a significant period of time.”

“On occasion, he would use money and candy as a way to placate children or reward them for allowing him to abuse them.”

Police believe there could be many more Highgate victims who have not yet come forward.

One of the Highgate victims read her impact statement in court, stating that she had felt anger, shame and disgust since the abuse began.

She told the court: ‘Ultimately, I hate you for abusing me. I loved football and you took it away from me.

I’ve lived with what you did for all these years. I just hope I can get the justice I deserve and be able to move on.”

Other victims said they had struggled with relationships throughout their lives after suffering at the hands of Highgate.

Another man said: “The stigma of being abused has affected me in many ways and I have only really accepted it in later life.”

Guildford Crown Court heard how the parents admired him as a respected figure in the community.

Judge Hunter described the Highgate offense as a serious breach of trust.

He said: ‘The children were in your care, you were looking after those children as members of the youth team of which you were the leader, mentor and coach.

A lot of those guys looked up to you. Certainly many of the parents looked up to him, respected him and looked up to him.

“In some cases, they were seriously wrong.”

Highgate pushed his hearing aid through the toughened glass panels of the dock at Guildford Crown Court before being told that he was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for 30 offenses against eight children.
