An EMS hero lieutenant and World Trade Center first responder has died after being stabbed to death while rendering aid to a patient in Queens.
Alison Russo-Elling, 61, was killed on duty around 2:20 p.m. m. Thursday in what has been described as a “vile and barbaric” stabbing, by a person allegedly known to the patient she was helping.
The deadly incident took place in broad daylight when a 34-year-old man, wearing a light gray shirt and dark pants, brandished a knife and viciously stabbed her multiple times throughout her body.

It is believed that her mother was “shopping for food near her” when she was stabbed to death.
Mayor Eric Adams said tonight that the suspect has been arrested and will “hold him accountable for his actions.”
Tributes flowed for the FDNY frontline worker as flags were lowered to half-staff to honor the brave woman.

Emergency Medical Service Lieutenant and World Trade Center first responder Alison Russo-Elling 61, died after being stabbed while assisting a patient in Queens.
Russo-Elling’s photo was released by colleagues Thursday night by the New York City Fire Department and details her long career as a frontline worker.
The EMS lieutenant, who was also known for her work as a World Trade Center first responder, was rushed to Mount Sinai Queens, where she was pronounced dead at 3:06 p.m.
‘I am angry that they took your life so young, working so hard. You dedicated your life to serving all humans, through COVID, through mental health, through all trauma and illness, putting your life on hold for others.
‘You deserved better, your daughter deserved more time with you.’

In an official statement from the New York City Fire Department, Russo-Elling’s death was used as a stark reminder of the dangers facing emergency service workers.
“The death of Alison Russo is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by each and every member of the FDNY and the uniformed services,” the statement read.
‘Your senseless killing of her brings sadness to all members of the FDNY. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Department with our heads bowed, and we will always be here to support our FDNY family through this unspeakably difficult time.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams offered his condolences at a news conference at Mount Sinai Hospital to Russo-Elling’s family, friends and colleagues in New York City.
“We lost one of our heroes, she served this city for over 24 years,” he said.

“She was on duty at the time she was brought here to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she passed away from her injuries.”

Suspect
“At 2:20 p.m. today, Lieutenant Alison Russo was on duty at Station 49, while outside her station she was stabbed multiple times in a barbaric and completely unprovoked attack,” he said.

Preliminary information shows that the suspect, who was seen by two witnesses who knew the perpetrator, was seen running to his home where he barricaded himself inside.
Once inside his home, the man was dissuaded from his residence before being taken into police custody.
Police say Russo-Elling was assisting a patient in the Astoria neighborhood at 2:20 p.m. m., when the patient’s emotionally disturbed relative stabbed the patient several times in the neck.
The EMS lieutenant, who has worked for the New York Fire Department for more than 20 years, was rushed to Mount Sinai Queens, where she was pronounced dead at 3:06 p.m.
New York Police Department Chief of Detectives James Essig told a news conference that the EMS worker had been on a break minutes before he was stabbed.
“Today at approximately 2:15 p.m. m., an FDNY EMS lieutenant on duty at the corner of 20th Avenue and 41st Street was brutally assaulted with a knife resulting in her death,” he said.
‘At 2:10 p.m. m., the EMS lieutenant was on her break and was going to look for food nearby.
She “she was assigned to an EMS station about a half block away and was dressed and clothed, clearly indicating that she worked as an FDNY EMT.”
Police were seen standing at the scene on 20th Avenue near 41st Street Thursday afternoon as they took a suspect into custody.

The incident comes as crime in the Big Apple is up more than 33 percent from last year.
Driving the increase is a more than 37 percent increase in the number of burglaries and a 32.4 percent increase in burglaries.
Felony assaults were also up 16.6 percent from last year, while grand thefts were up 43 percent.
