Fremantle Dockers star Jason Carter has been suspended from the AFL after being busted drink-driving.

The 20-year-old was sidelined for five matches by his club and is ‘required to step away’ from the game while he undertakes alcohol counselling.

The defender, who was drafted by the Dockers as in 2018, was caught drink-driving in Spearwood about 1am on Sunday when he was stopped by police.

Carter was in hot water with the club in April when a social media video exposed him at a house party in Perth at the height of the state’s coronavirus pandemic.

He was captured alongside two Fremantle teammates and four others.

The video uploaded by a woman at the party showed the group dancing in a lounge room as Carter played music from a DJ set up.

The group was not adhering social distancing at the time, according to Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick.

He said in a statement the club would continue to work with Carter and ‘his management to ensure he is provided with the appropriate amount of guidance and support during this time’.

‘Jason put the lives of other road users and himself at risk by getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,’ Garlick said.

‘As a club, we believe it is important to hold this type of behaviour to account.

‘Jason is a young man who has clearly made a poor decision but can learn from this experience.’

An investigation into Carter’s behaviour was conducted by the AFL, the statement added.

‘In relation to the AFL’s Covid-19 protocols, there was no sanction applicable to the club or player,’ it read.
