1. Aled joined the choir of Bangor Cathedral in his hometown when he was just 9 years old. He became their lead soloist within 2 years.
2. A member of the congregation was so impressed by the quality of his treble voice that they wrote a letter to the Welsh record label Sain who duly signed up Aled.
3. In 1982, he won the ‘Cerdd Dant’ (the art of vocal improvisation over a given melody in Welsh musical tradition) solo competition in the under-12 age category at the Urdd Eisteddfod. ‘Urdd’ is a national voluntary youth organization that provides opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences; while ‘Eisteddfod’ is a festival with several ranked competitions, including in poetry and music.
4. He achieved overnight fame for his cover version of a song titled Walking in the Air which was used in the 1982 British animated TV film titled The Snowman. The record reached number 5 in the UK charts in 1985.
5. In June 1985, he was the subject of an Emmy Award-winning BBC documentary titled The Treble.
6. By the time he turned 16, he had recorded more than 10 albums that had sold more than 6 million copies. His first biography, titled Walking on Air, was published in 1986.
7. He was honored with an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to music & broadcasting, and charitable services.
