- Aled joined the choir of Bangor Cathedral in his hometown when he was just 9 years old. He became their lead soloist within 2 years.
- A member of the congregation was so impressed by the quality of his treble voice that they wrote a letter to the Welsh record label Sain who duly signed up Aled.
- In 1982, he won the ‘Cerdd Dant’ (the art of vocal improvisation over a given melody in Welsh musical tradition) solo competition in the under-12 age category at the Urdd Eisteddfod. ‘Urdd’ is a national voluntary youth organization that provides opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences; while ‘Eisteddfod’ is a festival with several ranked competitions, including in poetry and music.
- He achieved overnight fame for his cover version of a song titled Walking in the Air which was used in the 1982 British animated TV film titled The Snowman. The record reached number 5 in the UK charts in 1985.
- In June 1985, he was the subject of an Emmy Award-winning BBC documentary titled The Treble.
