Erling Haaland Facts

  1. As Erling was born in Leeds, England, while his father was playing professionally there, he was eligible to play for England but eventually chose to represent his father’s native country Norway. When he was about 3 years old, he and his family moved to Bryne, his parents’ hometown in Norway.
  2. Besides playing soccer from a very young age, Erling also used to participate in handball, golf, and track and field events. He reportedly achieved a world record in his age category for the standing long jump event when he was about 5 years old, with a recorded distance of 1.63 m.
  3. He started his youth career with his hometown club Bryne FK. He played for the club’s reserve team Bryne FK 2 in the 2015-16 season, scoring 18 goals in just 14 games, and was consequently promoted to the senior team aged just 15.
  4. His cousin, Jonatan Braut Brunes, on May 16, 2016, became the youngest player ever to have represented Bryne FK. He beat the previous record set by Erling, just 4 days earlier.
  5. In July 2018, he scored 4 goals for Molde FK within the first 21 minutes against runaway league-table leader SK Brann. He was the club’s top goal-scorer (16 goals in 30 matches) across all competitions in that season.
  6. From July 2019 to September 2019, Erling scored an astonishing 4 hat-tricks for the Austrian club FC Red Bull Salzburg. During his stint with the club, he became the first player ever to net 6 goals in his first 3 games in the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League.
  7. He also became just the 2nd teenager in the history of the UEFA Champions League (after Karim Benzema) to have scored at least 1 goal in each of his first 3 appearances in the competition. In his next game in the competition, he became the first teenager in history to have scored goals in all of his first 4 matches in the competition. He went on to extend this record to 5 matches.
  8. In 2019, he was named the ‘Austrian Footballer of the Year’, an annual honor that was established in Austria in 1984 and is sponsored by the APA (Austria Press Agency). All players playing in the Austrian league as well as Austrian players playing abroad are eligible for this honor. He was also named the ‘Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season’ for his performances in the 2019–20 season.
  9. At the 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, he scored the most goals (9) even though Norway played only 3 games, getting knocked out in the group stage itself. The team scored 13 goals, 12 of which came in a 12-0 drubbing of Honduras and Erling scored all his 9 goals in that one game. This was Norway’s biggest-ever win at the under-20 level and Honduras’ heaviest-ever defeat. Erling also set a new tournament record for the most goals scored by a player in a match.
  10. He scored a hat-trick within 23 minutes in his debut game for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. This made him only the 2nd player (after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) in the club’s history to have scored 3 goals on his Bundesliga debut.
  11. He went on to become the 1st player in Bundesliga history to have scored 5 goals in his first 2 games in the league, as well as the fastest player to have scored his first 5 goals in the league (56 minutes). He then became the first player in Bundesliga history to have scored 7 goals in his first 3 games.
  12. In 2020, he was honored with the ‘Golden Boy’ award (presented by sports journalists to a young soccer player playing in Europe who is perceived to have been the most impressive during a calendar year) and the ‘Gullballen’ (presented annually by the Norwegian Football Federation to the best male and female Norwegian soccer players). That year, Erling was also named the ‘Norwegian Sportsperson of the Year’, an annual award presented by the Norwegian Association of Sports Journalists.
  13. In November 2020, he scored 4 goals in just 32 minutes in a 5–2 away victory against Hertha BSC. Later that month, he became the fastest player (12 games) to have recorded 15 goals in the UEFA Champions League. Later in the 2020-21 season, he became both the fastest (14 matches) and the youngest player to have scored 20 goals in the competition.
