The Democrats have been trying to get a hold of President Donald Trump’s tax records through a House Ways and Means Committee request since 2019.
In 2021, the Justice Department said Congress should be able to review the records, a decision Trump and his legal team have appealed.
U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ruled last December that the Treasury Department should turn the tax returns over to the congressional committee, and a three-judge panel on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with that ruling in August.
The full bench of the D.C. Circuit Court denied Trump’s request to stop the release last week.
The Trump team asked the Supreme Court to block the release of the records.
Now, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has issued a stay, temporarily stopping the release of the records to the Committee.
John Roberts has granted a temporary “administrative” stay in Trump’s bid to stop a House committee from obtaining his tax returns. This is not a ruling on the merits of Trump’s request; it merely keeps the lower-court ruling on hold while SCOTUS considers the request. https://t.co/7WrSBrZlFh pic.twitter.com/CVweLTl9S0

As the SCOTUS blog account notes, this isn’t a decision on the merits — it’s holding things in place while the question on the merits is being considered.
Prepare for the meltdown, as this is going to drive those on the left crazy that they still won’t get to their fishing expedition — at least not yet.
