It looked at a total of 18,000 studies, including 27 longitudinal studies. One and a half million people were involved in total.
As well as spotting higher incidences of stroke among people that drank lots of sugar-sweetened beverages, it also found that people were likely to have a range of other conditions.

Leonardo Pozza Santos, a researcher at the Department of Nutrition at the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, and his colleagues wrote: “Our systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that consumption of SSB intake appears to increase the risk obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, being the strongest evidence for type 2 diabetes.
They found that consuming SSBs increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 20 percent.
