Selma Blair talked about her decades-long friendship with Sarah Michelle Gellar in a new SELF video on the advice she would give her younger self. “I think I knew from the first moment I met Sarah Michelle Gellar that we would be friends forever, and she has made sure that’s happened,” Blair said. “If you have Sarah Michelle Gellar as your best friend, you really don’t need many other friends.”

Blair spoke about how she wanted to work with Gellar long before the two actually met. “I watched Sarah Michelle Gellar on All My Children, but I think I told someone—even before I was an actress; it was wishful thinking—I’m going to go to New York, and I’m going to try and get on All My Children and be friends with Kendall [the character Gellar played on the show].” Little did Blair know their paths would cross on the set of the 1999 hit Cruel Intentions. “I had no idea that my first big movie would be kissing Sarah Michelle Gellar, every scene would be with her,” Blair said. “I mean, it’s amazing…Thank you, universe.”

Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018, also said that Gellar has supported her through challenging times in her life, offering distinctly practical support. “She has shown up and been there and helped me and organized from the beginning,” Blair said. “One of the greatest people to organize, like, with community—like food trains for me.” Blair went on to say that Gellar’s acts of kindness taught her how to care for other people in times of crisis: “She’s really given me some tools to know how to help people.”

Gellar also helped Blair walk across the stage at the People’s Choice Awards last month, where she accepted the award for Competition Contestant of 2022 for her performance on the 31st season of Dancing with the Stars, according to People. In her acceptance speech, Blair joked about the kiss she shared with Gellar in Cruel Intentions and thanked her for her support, saying, “Oh my gosh, the last time I won an award was when I kissed you, Sarah. Good luck charm, for sure. Really, thank you to Sarah for being here for everything—that means something to me.” Gellar posted a photo of the two of them at the ceremony on Instagram, congratulating her “best friend” on the award.

Reflecting on the relationship, Blair said she would have told her younger self she has nothing to worry about with Gellar by her side. “I love her more than ever. I’m the luckiest girl,” Blair said. “What was I worried about?” She also joked about how she manifested their friendship, adding, “How did I make that happen? It is amazing, when you think about it.”

The video, produced alongside SELF’s January cover—in which Blair talks in-depth about her MS journey, DWTS experience, and disability advocacy—also looks back on other key moments in the actor’s life, including the struggles of motherhood, making her diagnosis public, and writing her “dream” memoir.
