Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick has revealed his beloved dog Keira is getting ‘stronger everyday’ after an ‘intensely traumatic’ van accident earlier this year.

The Irish veterinary surgeon, 52, appeared on Lorraine today, when he recalled ‘hearing his terrier’s body explode in front of him’ after she was hit by a van when it came speeding around the corner at his vet practice.

He revealed his 13-year-old terrier was ‘lucky to be alive’ after suffering internal organ damage and a badly fractured pelvis after she was hit by a vehicle.

He has previously credited the pooch with helping him recover from a deep depression after being accused of malpractice over his treatment of a tortoise.

Appearing on the breakfast programme, Noel recalled the accident, explaining: ‘It was intensely traumatic. I went out the back door or the practice and I saw a van hit her and pulled her from the front wheel.

‘I could hear her body explode in front of me, it was the most traumatic experience of my life.’

He explained he performed a procedure to save the animal’s life, after a colleague had already been operating for several hours.

Noel said:  ‘She was in intensive care for weeks and needed blood transfusions, my colleague operated on her for several hours and then I did for several hours. She’s 13-years of age so she’s an extraordinary dog.’

Noel offered an update on his dog’s recovery from the accident, explaining: ‘She’s a lot better now. She’s getting a little stronger every day. She’s lucky to be here, she’s my little girl.

‘She’s fighting and is a fighter like her daddy. She’s on the mend, thank you so much for everyone’s prayers and good wishes.’

The vet admitted that he realised what it’s like to be a client in his waiting room, and that he was ‘desperately worried’ about an ‘integral’ part of his family.

‘You don’t really compartmentalise [while operating] to be the client, to be the parent of the animal was a new experience for me.

‘I felt the shoe on the other foot and to be desperately worried about the animal you love and that is an integral member of your family.’

Noel was still writing his latest book when the dog was hit by the van, and says after pressure from his publishers it was his pet that inspired him to carry on.

‘The book almost didn’t happened’,  he explained, ‘They said “You haven’t written the last chapter” and I said I’ve been looking after Keira.

‘They said “Are you going to get it done?”

‘I looked at her and said, “Should I do the book?” And she looked at me and I wrote the book. It’s written as it came out of my mind. It’s real and it’s raw.’

Speaking of his love for animals, Noel explained that the ‘unconditional love’ of a pet can help ease stress and pain ‘no matter what is going on in your life’.

‘I think everybody who loves an animal and for whom an animal is a family member will relate to this.

‘No matter what is going on in your life, when something bad is happening in your life, you come home and you have an unconditional love in your life then everything seems like a better world.’
