After the fun and excitement of Christmas and New Year, the reality starts to set in that we have another two months of winter to contend with. Short days and cold temperatures aren’t exactly inspiring.

And with these factors we are more likely to suffer both physically and mentally, as we aren’t getting enough sunlight and are more exposed to winter illnesses. Luckily there are things we can do to help protect ourselves.

This includes taking certain supplements. Samantha Greener, wellness expert at Simply Supplements, spoke with Express.co.uk to explain more.

She said: “There are several supplements that can be taken throughout winter to help support immunity and raise energy levels. Not only is it the cold and flu season, but colder, dark days can take its toll and leave us regularly feeling sluggish, run down and fatigued.”

“Taking supplements such as B vitamins and magnesium can help with energy levels and reduce tiredness. Supplements such as zinc and vitamins D and C have also been suggested to be a help in fighting off winter infections and colds by providing the immune system with an extra helping hand.”

She recommended seven supplements to help give your body a boost this January.

Vitamin D

Our body usually produces all the vitamin D it needs from the sun’s rays, however, during the autumn and winter months, the sun is not strong enough for this.

It can be found in some foods such as oily fish, red meat and eggs but sometimes this is not enough.

Samantha said: “As many people find it difficult to get enough from food alone, the NHS recommend all adults consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement at this time of year.”

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is well-known for its ability to support our immune systems at this time of year.

However, it also plays many other beneficial roles in our bodies.

“From helping to reduce feelings of tiredness and fatigue to supporting psychological function, it also has antioxidant properties, which help to protect cells from oxidative stresses,” she said.

Cod liver oil

According to Samantha, cod liver oil is a great supplement to take all year round, but even more so during the winter months.

It is a rich, natural source of omega 3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and D.

She commented: “It’s often referred to as ‘brain food’, but also provides nutritional support for our vision, bones, immune system and skin health.”

Zinc

Zinc is a lesser-known supplement but should be a popular choice during the winter months.

“It not only helps support a healthy immune system, but also promotes healthy hair, skin and nails, which can often be affected by the colder weather,” Samantha said.

Echinacea

This herbal remedy can help prevent illnesses.

She said: “Echinacea is a handy supplement to keep in your cupboard, it’s a traditional herbal remedy that can either be taken as a preventative measure to help keep cold and flu infections at bay or may help to relieve symptoms if taken at the first signs of a cold.”

Milk thistle

Milk thistle supplements are most commonly taken in tablet form.

Samantha said: “At this time of year, we’re more likely to indulge in comfort foods and festive drinks, so milk thistle is another traditional herbal remedy that may help to aid feelings of indigestion or upset stomachs after periods of overindulgence.”

Vitamin B

Vitamin B actually includes eight different vitamins.

“Each plays a huge number of roles to keep you feeling your best – especially during the winter months,” she added.

“Just a few of the benefits include encouraging a healthy immune system, increasing energy levels, maintaining healthy hair, skin and nails, as well as supporting mental performance.”
