Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in the UK. It’s progressive condition, meaning symptoms develop gradually over many years, eventually becoming more severe.

It affects multiple brain functions, but one of the first symptoms, according to NHS doctor, Dr James O’Donovan, is memory lapses.

Having amassed more than 25,000 followers on TikTok, Dr O’Donovan listed seven symptoms that fall under this in a video posted to his channel.

1. Forget about recent conversations or events

2. Misplace items

3. Forget the names of places and objects

4. Have trouble thinking of the right word

5. Ask questions repetitively

6. Show poor judgement and find it harder to make decisions

7. Become less flexible and more hesitant to try new things

Dr O’Donovan added: “There may also be signs of mood changes such as increased anxiety or agitation, or periods of confusion.”

The exact cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, but it’s most common in people over the age of 65, says the NHS: “The risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia increases with age, affecting an estimated one in 14 people over the age of 65 and one in every 6 people over the age of 80.

“But around one in every 20 people with Alzheimer’s disease are under the age of 65. This is called early- or young-onset Alzheimer’s disease.”

There are other risk factors including:

  • A family history of the condition
  • Untreated depression, although depression can also be one of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Lifestyle factors and conditions associated with cardiovascular disease

It’s very important for anyone who has worsening problems with their memory or thinking to be assessed by a health professional.

The Alzheimer’s Society advises if a GP thinks their symptoms may be caused by dementia, they will refer the person to local memory service for more detailed assessment.
