- Her love for tennis came naturally to her as she was raised in a family that loved the sport. So much so that she was named after former top-20 player Naoko Sawamatsu, and her brother is named after Shuzo Matsuoka.
- At a young age, Nao dreamt of playing on the Centre Court of Wimbledon.
- Nao and her brother were introduced to tennis when she was 10, by their mother.
- At the age of 14, Nao began playing on the ITF Junior Circuit in January 2009. In March 2009, Nao made her debut at the Grade 1 Japan Open in Nagoya.
- At the age of 17, Nao began playing at the ITF Women’s Circuit in May 2012.
- She relocated to Kobe, Japan in 2015, to further training.
- On January 11, 2016, she was ranked as the number-one Japanese player in the WTA rankings for five weeks and reached the position again on April 3, 2023.
