The Carter family has been beset by further tragedy in recent months with the shock death of Nick Carter‘s younger sister Bobbie Jean at just 41 in December 2023.

BJ’s passing marks the third Carter sibling death by overdose in 11 years – following the heartbreaking losses of Leslie aged 25 in 2012 and Aaron in 2022 aged 34.

The Carters – comprised of five children with two surviving siblings Nick, 44, and Angel, 36 – and parents Bob Carter, who died aged 65 in 2017 and Jane Schneck, 65, was first thrust into the spotlight when Nick shot to fame aged 13 in the Backstreet Boys.

Aaron followed in his brother’s footsteps and became a child star when his singing career was launched before he turned 10 years old – with his parents later embroiled in an acrimonious divorce and fight over his multimillion dollar fortune which tore the family apart.

The siblings’ upbringing and fractious dynamic was documented in 2006 E! reality show, House of Carters, which showed physical fights between Nick and Aaron, BJ’s problem with alcohol and the family going to therapy to heal their wounds as they lived together for two months in LA.

NICK FIGHTS AARON OVER TAKING EX PARIS HILTON OUT TO SPITE HIM 

Nick and Aaron had a monumental physical fight which first erupted when the incensed I Want It That Way singer told his younger brother to stop recording music in the early hours of the morning.

Aaron shouted: ‘The way you talk to me, it’s like I’m your little kid dude!’ as Nick accused him of showing him ‘no respect’ by playing music loudly after midnight.

Nick said: ‘Let me tell you something real quick – you’re going to turn the music down and respect me right’ while putting his face extremely close to Aaron’s.

Aaron called out: ‘Don’t spit in my face, don’t spit in my face! I‘m sick of you doing this to me, stop it!’ as Nick pushed his brother into a bathroom and slammed the door – while his worried siblings rushed to intervene.

Aaron was heard saying: ‘Stop it, what are you doing?’ before the fight was broken up by production crew.

A tearful Aaron shouted: ‘I walk away from you every time you fight with me, run away from you! You are not a good person and everybody sees it Nick!’

Nick then accused his brother of ‘coming at him for the first time’ and ‘pushing his head against the door’ – leading him to bite his sibling.

Nick then claimed Aaron had taken his ex Paris Hilton – who he dated from January  to July 2004 – out the day after their break-up to spite him.

He said: ‘Everybody wants to know the truth, why I don’t trust my brother, why he doesn’t respect me… I’m gonna tell you why. Because when I broke up with Paris this guy takes her out and tries…

‘The next day I find his phone in the car and who is it –  it’s his phone taking a picture of her her smiling…

‘I told him it’s over and he goes out with her on a date!’

Aaron responded: ‘You belittle everybody Nick… it’s your personality, your attitude and the way you treat mom…’

NICK TRIES TO STOP BJ DRINKING TOO MUCH

BJ’s drunken outbursts were heavily documented on the reality show, with Nick saying in her show introduction: ‘BJ was really damaged from the whole divorce, probably worse than everybody else.’

Nick is seen attempting to stop BJ from drinking too much – but to no avail as she is seen stumbling around the house crying for her dog – before he is forced to put his tearful sister to bed, 

Nick says: ‘Look at you, you can barely stand! I’m trying to help you. Everybody’s going to sleep BJ.’

A slurring BJ says: ‘You’re making me go to bed, Nick I’m not.’

BJ is then seen accusing her sisters of being ‘very violent’ after she walks into a bedroom unannounced  and declares she is ‘leaving.’ 

Nick stops her and says: ‘I never said you were  drunk, I just said you had drunk too much, there’s a difference between the two. Maybe if you were in a stronger state of mind.

BJ responds: ‘I’ll never be in a stronger state of mind until people stop insulting me!’

FATHER SAYS AARON CARTER’S CHILDHOOD NICKNAME WAS ‘CASH COW’

A visit from the sibling’s father Bob and his wife Ginger leaves Aaron over the moon – but the mood quickly turns when the patriarch gives Aaron a stern talking-to over mom Jane.

Jane – who was battling health issues – had been in contact over payment of her medical bills.

Bob – who previously told a bereft Leslie that he was ‘never in love’ with Jane during their marriage – told Aaron: ‘You have to stand up for yourself. Don’t be weak!’ 

‘Tell her “I’m not your cash cow anymore!” adding ‘That’s what your name used to be, cash cow!’ as a somber Aaron looked on.

Aaron had claimed he made more than $200million before he even turned 18 years old.

He alleged his parents mishandled his money and neglected his finances.

‘There was a lot of neglect on my parents’ part,’ he said in 2016. ‘They didn’t do a lot of things right.’

Aaron owed $4million in tax liens when he turned 18. He was only given $2million when he became an adult, despite the Coogan law – which is designed to safeguard a portion of child performers’ earnings – stating he should have been given about $20million.

Owing twice as much money as he had, he filed for bankruptcy.

‘I was like, “I don’t want to do it because it’s embarrassing”, and people are going to be like, “Aaron Carter’s broke”, and all this stuff,’ Aaron said.

MOTHER JANE BECOMES ILL –  BUT NICK DOESNT BELIEVE HER 

The siblings were seen being visibly rocked when their mom Jane called them and informed them she was seriously ill – but Nick – who is now estranged from her – accuses her of ‘crying wolf’ again.

He says of the situation: ‘It’s years and years of crying wolf [from Jane and Bob], I am mad at both of them! If this is a serious situation I’m gonna take it seriously.

‘…Because they’ve done s***t to us out of anger. Calling up asking if I’m gay, are you kidding me? Why would you say that to your own son? She bashed me for years and years.’

As BJ tells Nick to ‘have a heart’ he responds: ‘I have a f*****g heart! My heart lies with you guys!’

BJ is seen telling Leslie and Aaron that she is paying for the mother’s medical bills, saying: ‘Nick has millions of dollars, he’s just buying all this stuff he doesn’t even need, he doesn’t even want to help take care of our mother.’

They added he ‘doesn’t care’ about their mother before branding him ‘heartless’ in another shock scene. 

Nick later says: ‘That’s the problem with families – they don’t realize what they’re doing to the children and before you know it,  a product like me turns out, I don’t give a damn what goes on.

‘I feel like I’ve lost my emotions because my emotions have been taken advantage of over the years.’

CARTER SISTERS GET IN ROW AND KNIFE IS PULLED

The divide between the Carter sisters was thrown under the spotlight in the reality series – with Leslie voicing how she felt like an outsider compared to BJ and Angel.

Nick said BJ and Angel were ‘jealous’ of Leslie’s ‘natural gifts’ such as singing and songwriting. 

A shock row erupted after Angel tousled Leslie’s hair when referencing how Leslie had removed something from Angel’s face three days prior.

Leslie then slapped Angel on the arm before Angel fought back. Angel then ran off with BJ trying to get in-between them and having a stool accidentally knocked into her legs.

Angel shouts at Leslie: ‘Look at what you did! Get back psycho!’ before pulling a carving knife while Leslie grabbed a spoon.

Angel says: ‘I’ll slit your throat, a knife is way better than a spoon!’

SIBLINGS UNDERGO HEARTBREAKING GROUP THERAPY

The siblings were filmed hashing out their issues in group therapy with a psychiatrist – where they were asked to bring their biggest gripes to the table.

Aaron said he believed he was the cause of his parents’ divorce, saying: ‘They were fighting over my money, I was used from the get go.

‘I didn’t see a day of high school, I didn’t go to a prom. I was the provider of the family.’

The siblings recalled being dragged into their parents’ marital issues, with Angel saying they would ‘all hide together’ when Bob and Jane rowed.

She said: ‘They would ask us “who do you want to live with, you have to pick right now?”

AARON SUSTAINS LIVER DAMAGE AFTER GETTING HIT BY SURFBOARD 

The family headed off for a mini break in San Diego but the day ended in disaster when Aaron became extremely unwell after being hit by a surfboard.

Aaron started vomiting with his siblings forcing him to seek medical care. It was then revealed the surfboard had hit his liver, causing internal bleeding. 

A tearful Aaron said from his hospital bed: ‘I don’t want everyone to freak out if it’s something bad… whatever it is, I’ll find a way through it.’

He was discharged from hospital but sparked yet another row when he voiced his intentions to return to LA with a friend just hours later.

Nick and Aaron had a blazing argument in the street before tearfully hugging. 

Bobbie Jean Carter died from a fentanyl and methamphetamine overdose aged just 41 in December 2023.

First responders had found Bobbie Jean unresponsive in the bathroom of her Tampa, Florida home on the morning of December 23 and rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.

Bobbie Jean – who was a mother of one daughter, Bella, eight – was on probation for cocaine possession when she died according to law enforcement –  but her roommates had told them that she had not used any narcotics since her prison release.

Bobbie Jean’s official cause of death is intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner in Florida, per TMZ.

Her death has been ruled accidental.

The Medical Examiner’s report states Bobbie’s roommate last had contact with her at 6:30 AM on December 23 but around 7 AM, the roommate found Bobbie  unresponsive on the bathroom floor and called 911.

First responders tried life-saving measures on Bobbie before she was transported to a Tampa hospital, where, at 8:02 AM, she was pronounced dead.

Bobbie Jean — or BJ, as she was known to her family — is the third Carter sibling to meet an early death. Aaron Carter passed away on November 5, 2022, at the age of 34, while a decade earlier, in 2012, Leslie Carter died at the age of 25. Both deaths were caused by overdoses.

It takes just a small dose of fentanyl to cause an overdose. Just two milligrams – the equivalent of five grains of salt – is enough to cause death. 

Bobbie Jean was laid to rest in a city outside of Tampa during a ‘small, private ceremony’ attended by family and friends last month. 

Nick broke his silence over the death of Bobbie Jean – writing that he is ‘completely heartbroken’ in emotional tribute on Instagram.

‘It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years – most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean,’ the Backstreet Boys star wrote on Thursday.

He also shared a vintage throwback picture of himself and with Bobbie Jean playing as children.

Nick’s post followed the report that Bobbie Jean’s daughter Bella, eight, is in the custody of her grandmother, Schneck, 64.

In a statement to TMZ the grieving mother spoke about her devastating loss. 

‘I am in shock from learning of the sudden death of my daughter, Bobbie Jean; and I will need time to process the terrible reality of this happening for the third time,’ she began.

‘When I am able to think clearly, I’ll release a fuller statement; but until then I would request to be left to grieve in private.’

She added: ‘However deeply a parent feels the loss of a child, the suffering of a young child at the loss of a parent must be much greater.’

‘So, I would ask the sympathetic to say a prayer for my precious eight year old granddaughter Bella, who previously lost her father and is now also left without her mother.’

Aaron died from an accidental drowning at his home in Lancaster, California, caused after his inhaling difluoroethane and taking alprazolam, the generic form of brand-name Xanax. He was 34. 

Leslie died of a drug overdose at age 25 in 2012.

In June, Bobbie Jean was arrested on a shoplifting charge for an incident at Hobby Lobby and was put on a suicide watch after threatening to kill herself.

Investigators discovered she was in possession of fentanyl at the time.

 Angel made a lengthy statement on Instagram Sunday, promising to prevent the trauma that haunted her siblings from hurting the next generation. 

‘This starts with our children, and creating healthy conversation within the home. The generational dysfunction stops now.’ she wrote Sunday.
