A doctor has outlined three powerful drinks that could boost your gut and liver health. What’s more, you might already be enjoying one of them on a daily basis.

Dr Joseph Salhab, board-certified gastroenterologist and liver specialist, took to his TikTok channel to explain what beverages are “great” for your liver and stomach.

The medical expert recommended reaching for black coffee, green tea and smoothies.

1. Black coffee

Dr Salhab explained that the popular beverage has been shown to be good for your liver health. He said: “It can help control fatty liver disease and has been shown to decrease your risk of liver cancer.”

The doctor added that dark roast is less acidic, making this type a better option for people with acid reflux. “So if you have acid reflux, give a dark roast a try,” he said.

2. Green tea

If you don’t like the taste of black coffee or simply try to consume less caffeine, then green tea could be a good alternative.

The doctor said: “Green tea contains catechins which are powerful antioxidants and have been shown to be beneficial for both the gut and the liver.

“Now, green tea contains some caffeine – less than black coffee – but you can also get a caffeine-free formulation.”

3. Smoothie

For those who avoid caffeine altogether, the gastroenterologist recommended making smoothies packed with antioxidants.

He said: “If you want something that’s completely caffeine free, I’d recommend blending fruits and vegetables with high antioxidant content which includes things like berries – so we’re talking about blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, pomegranate, cherries, mango, papaya.

“You can mix it with other things, such as beets, which contain a high amount of antioxidants, kale, spinach, broccoli. Blending will not affect the nutrient quality.”
