Retief, also known as “The Iceman” and “The Goose,” was struck by lightning in 1985 as a teenager. He was only four days shy of his 16th birthday when the incident occurred at Pietersburg Golf Club, where he was waiting out a rainstorm before heading to the course for golf. His friend, Henri Potgieter, who was walking 20 yards ahead, was knocked down, while Goosen was ‘ smoking, no clothes, burned black from head to tail.’ Fortunately, a doctor was present on the golf course when Potgieter went to ask for assistance.
Three weeks after the lightning strike, he returned to the golf course. He hasn’t looked back since.
