Dr Michael Mosley urged dieters to ditch sugar completely, especially in the morning, if they want to lose weight in weeks.
He advised: “Cut right down on sugar – sugary treats, sugary drinks and desserts. That includes most breakfast cereals, which are usually full of sugar, as well as most commercial smoothies.”
Therefore, sugary cereals, pastries and sweet treats should be avoided for breakfast as they will “give a sugar rush and then leave you feeling starving soon after”.
Instead, people should opt for porridge, overnight oats, and eggs – especially omelettes and kippers, according to the weight loss guru.
Slimmers should also cut out starchy carbs, Dr Mosley warned, which includes bread, pasta, potatoes and white rice. Instead, go for whole grains like bulgur (cracked wheat), whole rye, wholegrain barley, wild rice and buckwheat, he recommended.
Michael Mosley recently shared a Basic Bircher recipe on his TikTok channel, which is the perfect breakfast option for those trying to lose weight before the summer.
Bircher Muesli is considered the original overnight oats and was developed in 1900 by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Brenner who would give it to his patients.
To make the delicious breakfast you only need rolled oats, grated apple, Greek yoghurt and a lemon. Sprinkle some chopped almonds, top with blueberries and store in the fridge overnight.
Why is Bircher Muesli or overnight oats good for weight loss?
Health site Lifemd explained that overnight oats have many health benefits including weight management. This is because they are lower in calories compared to most breakfast foods.
Oats have “high fibre content, which can make you feel fuller for longer. This helps to control your appetite, naturally reducing your calorie intake”.
Another healthy breakfast alternative is cottage cheese, and Michael Mosley has a delicious cottage cheese with blueberries and walnuts recipe, which can be prepared in just two minutes.
