Sarah Hogan has been named the Washington Commanders’ coaching chief of staff. Hogan formerly worked for the Atlanta Falcons under Dan Quinn and Arthur Smith. Sarah Hogan’s passion for football started with her father, Greg Gigantino, who has been a football coach for over 40 years. Sarah, a graduate of Georgia State University, started working with the Falcons in 2015.
Sarah was promoted to Director of Coaching Operations at Falcons last year. So there’s a potential Sarah opted to work with Commanders because of her Falcon’s relationship with Dan Quinn. The Commanders have reorganized their coaching staff. They’ve hired Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator, David Blough as assistant quarterbacks coach, and Brian Johnson as associate head coach and offensive pass coordinator. Earlier this year, Commanders appointed Adam Peters as general manager. Lance Newmark, the assistant general manager, was recently appointed by Peters.
Who is Sarah Hogan? Commanders Coaching the Chief of Staff
Sarah Hogan, the former Atlanta Falcons assistant director of coaching operations, is a Merrick, New York native. Hogan started her administrative career in football at James Madison University. Sarah grew up in a football-coaching household, so dealing with players and coaches came easy. Hogan also had the chance to engage with the New York Jets club since her father was the coach at Hofstra. This is where the Jets would have their training camp.
Sarah worked in the scouting department at James Madison University before graduating in 2004 with a kinesiology degree. She enrolled in Georgia State University’s master of sports administration program. Sarah worked at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s campus leisure facility while obtaining her degree.
Sarah began her career as an operations and facilities coordinator at the University of Maryland after earning her master’s degree. But it wasn’t until she enrolled at Northeastern University that she started working full-time. Sarah advanced to the position of Director of Football Operations at Northeastern University. She was appointed to the position in 2007 and served until 2009, when Northeastern discontinued the football program.
Her NFL journey began with the Falcons
Sarah returned to Georgia State University in 2010 and served as the Director of Football Operations for five years. Sarah was appointed as the scouting administration coordinator for the NFL franchise Atlanta Falcons in 2015. In an interview with the NFL website, Sarah said that she joined the Falcons via a familial link. Dan Quinn, the former Falcons head coach, praised Sarah’s work and asked if she wanted to assist with head coach operations when his assistant departed.
Sarah stated that she was the one who created the Falcons’ Coordinator of Head Coach role. Sarah was promoted to Assistant Director of Coaching Operations in 2021, and she took over as Director of Coaching Operations last year. When asked what she liked most about her job, Sarah replied she enjoyed discussing coaches’ terms and dealing with them daily. Hogan also said that she wanted to bridge the gap between the coaches and players and the rest of the team that works behind the scenes. One of her aims was to foster a teamwork atmosphere.
Sarah Hogan Family
Sarah Hogan, formerly Sarah Gigantino, is the daughter of Greg and Cathy Gigantino. Greg Gigantino has been a football coach for more than four decades, beginning at Indiana University. Greg spent his early coaching career at Lehigh University, Davidson College, Iona College, and Rutgers University. Greg worked at Cornell University between 1998 and 2000 before moving on to Hofstra.
Greg was the defensive line coach at Hofstra for 12 seasons, and his team’s defense was consistently rated in the top 10. He joined Bryant University in 2006 as defensive coordinator and helped the Bulldogs finish as the best defense in Bryant Football history. He departed the club during the 2017 season to attend Mater Dei Prep. Greg spent one season at Mater Dei Prep, especially working with their linebackers. He joined Bethany College in 2019 and served as an assistant coach/defensive line coach for a couple of seasons.
Sarah said in her interview that her father never encouraged her to follow in his footsteps in football. But he always supported her choice. Sarah also acknowledged her husband, JP Hogan, stating he had been very supportive during her experience. The pair married in 2015, and Sarah has posted many family images on her Facebook page.
