Struggling to catch those Zs? It might be down to the temperature of your bedroom. Sleep experts have disclosed the optimal bedroom temperature for a night of undisturbed slumber and it’s all about aiding your body’s natural thermoregulation process.

Vortex Air’s sleep specialists have let slip the secret to the perfect bedroom climate for nodding off with ease. As your body prepares for sleep, it naturally cools down by a couple of degrees and maintains this lower temperature while you’re in the land of nod.

They explained: “If you keep a cool bedroom, you’re assisting your body in the process of falling into a restful sleep.”

However, if your sleeping quarters are too warm, you’ll find yourself feeling weary both mentally and physically, yet paradoxically struggling to drift off.

The ideal bedroom temperature

Sleep psychologists pinpoint the ideal bedroom temperature for most adults as between 60F to 68F, or 15C to 19C. The consensus is that a dark, cool and quiet environment is the ticket to improving your sleep quality.

It’s worth noting that age can tweak this temperature sweet spot slightly. Babies, for example, may benefit from a slightly warmer room as their bodies are still developing the ability to regulate their temperature effectively.

Older adults, who typically experience lower levels of melatonin, cortisol and overall body temperature, may need to adjust their bedroom warmth upwards. If you’re pondering whether to tweak your sleep environment as you age, it’s wise to seek advice from a healthcare professional.

For an ideally chilled bedroom, Vortex Air recommends: “Try to lower the amount of heat that builds up in the room throughout the day. It’s also a good idea to invest in an air conditioning unit, fan, and/or cooling bedding.”

To signal your body it’s time to wind down and regulate its temperature for sleep, dial down your thermostat a couple of hours before hitting the sack.
