As the summer holiday season kicks in, it’s tempting to let go of our usual dietary discipline, but experts warn that overindulgence can not only ruin your trip with ill health but also lead to post-holiday blues.
Gut health guru Chris Dubberley has dished out his top advice for keeping your diet on track while soaking up the sun. He advocates for smart eating habits and making conscious food choices to ensure you don’t derail your health goals while away.
Chris advises: “Time Restricted Eating (TRE) is a beneficial approach to maintaining your diet while on holiday. Having a late breakfast and finishing your evening meal earlier can support weight loss, improve your mood, and increase energy levels.”
He also suggests: “Walking is an excellent way to stay active during your holiday. It’s a great form of exercise and allows you to explore your surroundings intimately. Consider walking or biking to your sightseeing locations whenever possible.”
On tackling the all-you-can-eat hotel buffet, Chris recommends: “When enjoying hotel buffets, it’s important to choose wisely. Opt for healthier breakfast options like eggs, omelettes with vegetables, Greek yoghurt with berries, and avocado for healthy fats. Avoid high-calorie items such as pastries, cereals, and fruit juices.”
And when it comes to alcohol, Chris told Wales Online: “Managing alcohol intake is crucial for avoiding unnecessary weight gain. Choose red wine over other alcoholic beverages and drink water between alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated and pace your intake.
“Having emergency food options on hand can help you stay on track. Pack snacks like nuts, seeds, and fresh fruit for long day trips. Preparing your sandwiches and salads with local ingredients can also be a healthier alternative to eating out.
“Remember, the key to enjoying your holiday without derailing your diet is balance and moderation. It’s okay to indulge occasionally, but be mindful of portion sizes and make healthier choices when possible.”
