Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in the world, claiming a staggering 55,000 lives everyday, and one life every 1.5 seconds, according to the BHS. Dietary choices are viewed as a significant contributor to this, with the NHS warning against consuming too many fried foods, cheeses and processed meats.

But could there be any foods that help ward off this condition? Experts seem to think so – and one is selling at Lidl for under £1. Believe it or not, this product is the supermarket’s reduced fat Meadow Fresh Houmous, retailing at a mere 69p.

Dubbed as Lidl’s ‘healthiest dip’ by nutrition guru Jenna Hope, she claims it’s packed with an array of nutrients that are crucial for health. “These mini versions are perfect for taking as an addition to lunch or as an afternoon snack with some carrot sticks,” she told Women’s Health.

“[Houmous] is a great source of plant-based protein and healthy fats. The tahini and the chickpeas provide an iron hit which is vital for oxygen transport and storage and energy maintenance, and it’s a source of plant-based zinc, important for cell signalling and protein structure.”
