Blood sugar – the main type of sugar you get from eating food – supplies the body’s cells with energy. However, consistently high levels can unleash destruction on the body. If you have type 2 , you are prone to high blood sugar levels because the main regulating force – insulin production – is impaired. What are the main signs to know indicating it could be an emergency?

Eye damage

WebMd lists the symptoms experienced with the eyes signalling an emergency which include:

Blurred vision

Trouble reading

See rings around lights or dark spots

Get very sensitive to sunlight and other bright light

Can’t see well at night

The health site added: “Eye damage doesn’t always cause symptoms, even when it’s advanced.

“So, it’s important to see an eye doctor at least once a year for a thorough exam.”

Who’s at risk

Researchers don’t know what causes type 2 diabetes, but they believe several factors are at play.

Those factors include genetics and lifestyle, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

At the root of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance, and prior to a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, you may be diagnosed with prediabetes, notes the NIDDK.

What will your GP recommend?

Lifestyle changes are usually recommended to bring blood sugar levels down to keep the risks of diabetes at bay.

There are two key components to blood sugar control – eating a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise.

A common misconception about type 2 diabetes is that you need to avoid eating certain foods.

There’s technically nothing you cannot eat if you have type 2 diabetes, but you’ll have to limit certain foods.
