A mum has come under fire for packing zero per cent alcohol ‘vodka’ in her children’s lunchboxes – but she claims it was ‘all just a joke’.

The director of a pilates studio, from New Zealand, shared a picture on her business’ Instagram Story showing three lunchboxes – each packed with a yoghurt, sliced apples, biscuits, a chocolate muffin covered in gummy bears and a can of Pals.

‘Perfect addition to school lunches too,’ she wrote about the zero per cent alcohol.

The beverage is said to ‘taste like the real deal’, with the alcoholic brand insisting drinkers can ‘enjoy that 100 per cent Pals taste, with zero per cent alcohol’.

However, the mum told Daily Mail Australia she never intentionally sent her kids to pre-school and school with the non alcohol drinks because it was ‘just a joke’ she shared with her clients.

A screenshot of her post has been circulating on Twitter, with many outraged over the ‘irresponsible’ addition of the cans in her children’s lunchboxes.

‘I can’t control other people’s sense of humour,’ the mum told Daily Mail Australia.

‘We probably don’t parent the same, have the same friends or share similar political views. But that’s OK – isn’t it? I hope their concern didn’t keep them up all night, they have kids to raise after all.’

On Tuesday, she told New Zealand Herald the non-alcoholic drinks were placed in her children’s lunchboxes ‘momentarily’ before they were removed shortly after she took the picture.

‘My kids, and the lunchboxes they were in, were not influenced at all. Not one bit. No kids were sent to school or preschool with them either under my influence,’ she said.

The mum went on to explain how she simply took the picture to ‘have a laugh’ with her clients and the followers on her business’ social media account.

‘Just like I have the personal rights to pop down to the booze shop and purchase a zero per cent Heineken and put it into my kids lunch boxes. For a gag,’ she said.

Her response comes after her post was re-shared on Twitter, leaving many shocked at the mum for packing the zero alcohol cans in her children’s lunchboxes.

‘Please tell me this is a joke. A really s*** one,’ one woman wrote.

Another said: ‘I’m already imagining young kids grabbing the wrong Pals from the fridge for an after school drink… very irresponsible marketing. And not from Pals.’

While one added: ‘Wow putting a non alcoholic drink in a school lunch! How irresponsible.’
