The tumour affects the prostate, which is a small gland that’s found in the pelvis of men.

It’s not always easy to know if you’re at risk of prostate cancer, as the symptoms tend to develop very slowly over a long period of time.

But, one of the most common warning signs of prostate cancer is finding blood in your urine.

Your wee isn’t likely to become the colour of blood that you might notice if you cut yourself; there will be more subtle changes to the colour of your urine.

“Seeing blood in your urine can be alarming,” said the Mayo Clinic.

“While in many instances the cause is harmless, blood in urine can indicate a serious disorder.

“Gross haematuria produces pink, red or cola-coloured urine due to the presence of red blood cells. It takes little blood to produce red urine, and the bleeding usually isn’t painful. Passing blood clots in your urine, however, can be painful.

“Bloody urine looks different, but you might not be able to tell the difference. It’s best to see your doctor anytime you see red-coloured urine.”

Meanwhile, some of the more common prostate cancer symptoms include losing control of your bladder, and having a reduced flow of urine.

A burning pain while passing urine may also be caused by the disease.

Other symptoms include finding blood in your semen, and passing more urine – particularly at night.

The exact cause of prostate cancer isn’t entirely known, said the NHS.

You could have a higher risk of developing the condition if you’re over 50 years old, or have a family history of prostate cancer.

Obesity may increase your chances of the disease, while there is some evidence that a diet high in calcium could raise your risk.

Around 50,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year in the UK.

But 84 per cent of all patients live for at least another 10 years after their initial diagnosis, said Cancer Research UK.
