Amir Aliakbari Facts
- The first misdemeanor of Amir’s wrestling career came in 2012 when he had missed the London Olympics due to a doping suspension. A year later, at the World Wrestling Championships, he had won the ‘Gold’ medal in the 120 kg category. However, in December 2013, he had been banned for life after a second doping offence had come to light and he was also stripped of his ‘Gold’ medal.
- In 2014, a longtime MMA entrepreneur name Mishal Abul had convinced him to pursue a career in mixed martial arts. He had reluctantly agreed, thus becoming the first Iranian wrestler to pursue an MMA career. He had made his professional MMA debut in October 2015 and had won his first 2 bouts via TKO in the first round.
- In early 2016, he had signed up with the Japanese promotion Rizin Fighting Federation. After 5 wins in 6 bouts at the promotion, he had joined Absolute Championship Berkut in December 2017.
- In June 2019, it was reported that he had been signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after he had offered compensation to his then promotion for early termination of his contract. This amount was later donated to a charitable cause. However, he was forced to withdraw from the UFC contract due to the doping ban that had been handed down to him by the international amateur wrestling governing body as well as the US economic sanctions on Iran.
- In August 2020, he had signed a contract with the ONE Championship, a Singapore-based mixed martial arts promotion.
