The extent to which the booster vaccines provide protection against the Omicron variant and how often they will be needed is unknown at this stage.

“If the variant does undermine vaccine performance, extra protection against the virus might require four or more jabs, possibly with new vaccine formulations — sharpening questions over whether boosting will need to continue indefinitely,” states an article published in the journal Nature.

“The Omicron variant has also further clouded forecasts of how booster campaigns will affect the pandemic’s trajectory.”

Experts do appear optimistic about the efficacy of the booster vaccines, however.
